Story Behind the Art:

• The majority of the weavers who create this rug are women living in villages in Afghanistan, Pakistan, and India. Hand-tufting is a rug making process where weavers insert yarn into the rug backing with a hand-held tufting gun to push and pull the threads through a pre-woven grid foundation. In a tufted rug, the tops of the loops are sheared to expose the ends of the threads for a softer, plusher pile. The wool used for these rugs is provided by local villagers, and the community thrives from rug weaving as local farmers benefit from wool sales and local artisans create natural and vegetable dyes for the weavers to use in their designs. The handcrafted touch of artisan skill creates variations in color, size, and design, making each piece unique.
