Although the instructions seemed a little daunting, this clock was very easy to start up. The "polarity" for inserting the alkaline battery was not marked with a + or - but there was a battery drawn with correct positioning on the back of the clock, just above the battery insertion area. The instructions said to "position the clock on an exterior wall that faces Ft. Collins, Colorado," which I had not known when I bought the clock. The wall I wanted the clock to face was just the opposite, on an interior wall and facing the opposite direction, so I wasn't expecting it to work (additionally we live in a canyon and get poor TV and radio reception). After inserting the battery and pressing the correct time zone button (one of 4 buttons), the hands of the clock started spinning, ending at the 4:00 position. They stayed there for about 5 min and then repositioned themselves at exactly the correct time. The clock has worked perfectly since then (2 weeks) and on the wall I wanted. The directions gave other options in case the clock didn't start up on its own, including manually setting the time which allows it to function as a quartz clock. Physically, it is a lovely clock, made of metal, and not cheap looking like so many clocks made these days. It is easy to read. It does have a very soft swishing sound of the second hand; however, we have no carpeting and every sound is magnified here. It is in my kitchen with my brushed stainless appliances and it matches perfectly. I'm very happy that I bought it and highly recommend.
Great for a small patio area. Has held up well outside for one year already in no direct Colorado sunlight. Able to purchase seat cushions at a local store that fit well. Only problem was one leg base pushed in a little too far made chair wobbly and we were able to fix this. Very comfortable place for a glass of wine or reading.
