We had the opportunity to try two other roasters before we selected this one. We'd skillet-roasted coffee for years but decided it was time to purchase a roaster. The first one we tried was quite small and the volume of coffee one could roast was meager plus it was very smoky. The second was better but very smoky and noisy. The Nesco Pro 800-watt Coffee Bean Roaster is an amazing roaster and will roast beans very dark. We purchase Peaberry beans, which are small, and dense so a roaster needs to be able to roast to the very dark roast we prefer. The only reason I gave this roaster a 4 star instead of a 5 star is the lid is not strong enough to hold and we have to put a weight on it to keep it from stopping the roast before it is finished and the roasting cylinder is difficult to clean. It is relatively quiet and smokeless which is very nice.
