Story Behind the Art:
Based in Salt Lake City, Utah, SofaZen is a fourth-generation family-owned and operated company specializing in handcrafted upholstered furniture. FSC-certified hardwoods are used to build the frames, with most other materials used in production being recyclable. Routers, used to cut fabric and wood, help significantly reduce waste. Fabrics, padding and springs are all applied by hand. As a young man, the company's founder, Louis Henteleff, earned a living reupholstering furniture in the infamous Russian town of Chernobyl. In 1913, in search of a better life, he emigrated to America and found work in an upholstery factory in Los Angeles. Eventually, Louis decided he wanted to open his own factory and heard there were good opportunities in Salt Lake City. In 1928, he and his brother-in-law Ben headed to Salt Lake without any money. They paid a visit to one of the prominent furniture stores in the city and asked not only for some business, but for payment in advance. They got the funds, bought the materials they needed, and the business was born. With its 100-year anniversary approaching, the company is currently operated by Scott and Jeff, Louis's great grandsons. The company employees around 30; one frame builder has worked there for 40 years. The grandsons take great pride in carrying on the traditions set forth by their grandfather., and strive to make high-quality furniture and provide excellent customer service
