Story Behind the Art:
The NOVICA Handmade Blown Glass Aurora Tumbler Set is crafted by Can'tel Blown Glass Artisans in Guatemala. The cooperative was founded in 1976 by fifteen artisans who had formerly worked together as employees in a difficult job that had worn them down physically, intellectually, and emotionally. They formed the cooperative to create something better and saw the opportunity to produce handcrafted designs in blown glass. The cooperative recycles glass purchased from businesses and individuals to contribute to the ecology. The art of blown glass has a long history that is believed to have begun with artisans in Egypt. The Cantel Blown Glass Artisans learned the techniques by meeting with foreign blown glass artisans and practicing with great care, determination, dedication, and attention to detail. The cooperative's dream is to reach a wide market, both in Guatemala and internationally, and sell their designs based on fair market prices while continuing as a proud Guatemalan enterprise.
