Story Behind the Art:
Pottery Avenue is committed to preserving the art and tradition of fine Polish pottery stoneware. Centered in and around Boleslawiec, the village has been famous for pottery since the early 14th century. Almost everyone in the village is involved in creating pottery, with most learning the craft from their parents and grandparents. Production methods have evolved and employ some new technologies, yet the hand-painted techniques have virtually stayed the same. It can take more than 7 days to complete a piece and each must pass 8 separate quality checks. Most patterns are forms of twigs, flowers and birds in the classic cobalt and white, though other colors and patterns have been introduced to appeal to contemporary customers.[Twila Abrams] Each design is created by the design team with up to 20 new designs introduced each year and the unique shapes are designed by Janina Bany-Kozlowska, an award-winning designer who has over 1600 shapes in circulation around the world and is celebrated by her peers and recipient of the Medal for Merit to Culture, Gloria Artist award.
