Handmade Herjole African Wood Mask (Ghana) - 15.25" H x 6" W x 3.1" D

A welcoming sense of peace exudes from the "Herjole" wall mask designed by Sefah Annwhar. Meaning "Peace Giver" in the Ga language, the mask is adorned with a dove looking downward. Annwhar carves the original sese wood mask by hand and accents it with embossed aluminum on the headdress, clay on the cheeks for texture, and painted details.

Story behind the art: 

I am a funny, calm and a bit complicated person. Sefah Annwhar is my name. I was born on April 5, at Darkuma in Accra. I got interested in art at a tender age. I used to play with wood in my father’s workshop whiles growing up. I started learning how to carve during my Junior High school. At weekends and during vacation, my father took me through the basics. I was so excited to learn, this interest helped to improve fast at the skill. I realized that carving give the opportunity to be creative make me love it. I can develop anything that comes to mind and this increases my creative mind. I have not thought anyone yet, but hope to teach several people haw to carve. I had to stay up late with my dad whiles he carves orders he has received, to take advantage to practice my hands on what I have been thought during the day, This is how I got to master my skill. At the initial stage, it was confusing and challenging but as I master it, has been easy. I use sese wood, aluminum, brass and clay for my works and these materials are easy to obtain from the market. I get my inspiration from my father and nature. There have been funny moments in my life, I recall an incidence back in Senior High school, together with my friend after we have closed from school and were walking home. A mad woman was approaching holding a big stick. For fear of our lives we had to run faster than we could. I decided to run back to the school only to find the gates locked. The good things was that the mad woman did not follow me. My dream is to train people carving and designing. I also want to feed the poor.
