  • Fan

A well-maintained mattress is essential to your rest, and your rest is essential to great health. Make sure you sleep well by learning how to protect a mattress. You may know that taking care of other bedding, such as sheets and pillows, is crucial to your sleep, but a well-protected mattress is just as vital. With a few easy steps, you'll be able to rest easy knowing that your mattress is taken care of!

Mattress Protection:

  1. Flip your mattress. The first step you can take is the least you can do to protect your mattress. Flip it over once every six months. This allows the mattress to wear evenly on both sides. Flip it so that the top becomes the bottom and the foot is switched with the head. Mark these switches down on a calendar to avoid forgetting.

  2. Purchase a mattress pad. Purchase a mattress pad or a mattress cover for the surface of the mattress. Most mattress pads come with elastic ends that can be hooked onto the ends of the mattress so they won't shift out of place.

  3. Vacuum your mattress. Dust is an inevitable problem when it comes to mattresses. Dust can reduce the life span of a mattress if ignored. As soon as you begin to notice dust on your mattress, take action and battle it with a vacuum. Allergy sufferers will need to do this frequently.

  4. Wash stains. Take care of stains with some upholstery shampoo or a dry detergent and a warm, damp sponge. Be careful with liquid, though, as wet mattresses take some time to dry.

  5. Dry the mattress. Drying your mattress after cleaning it is critical. You can let the mattress dry outside or you can focus a fan on the wet area. For heavier mattresses, a fan is usually your best option.

  6. Take care of your mattress. As much fun as it may seem, jumping on your bed can be extremely harmful to your mattress. Jumping causes stress on the springs and even breakage. Ban bouncing and protect your investment.

Tips from

  1. Please note: unlike traditional mattresses, memory foam and pillow top mattresses cannot be flipped over. Pillow top and memory foam mattresses should be rotated to increase their lifespan.
