How to Choose Lamps for a Bedroom
Think about how the lamps will be used
If they are the main source of light in the room, you will need to choose large lamps, perhaps floor lamps, which are able to support a large wattage bulb. If the lamps are simply for decoration, you can be more creative with your design choices.
Look at where the lamps will be placed
Check to make sure you have an outlet nearby. You do not want lamp cords stretched across the room. Also, determine the space allowed for the lamp. For example, narrow nightstand tables require lamps with narrow bases. A bedroom with a sloping roof, such as a converted attic room, might have a corner space that is too short for a tall floor lamp.
Decide on a style
Match your lamps to the style of your room. A traditional, Tiffany-style lamp may look out of place in a sleek, modern room. Choose lamps with the same or similar materials as your furniture.
Test them out
If you are choosing a new reading lamp, for example, place an existing lamp next to your bed, turn it on and hold a book nearby. Then decide if you’ll need a taller or shorter lamp in order to have enough light for reading in bed or walking across the room at night. Also, you should be able to operate any bedside lamp while you’re lying down, so this lighting must be easily turned on and off.
Bedroom Lighting Tip
If you like the base of a lamp but not the shade, consider purchasing a functional base and replacing the lamp shade.
