How to Buy Futon Covers
Buying Futon Mattress Covers:
Measure Your Futon
To ensure a good fit with your futon cover, you’ll need to take out a tape measure and measure the length, width and depth of your futon. Twin-size futons are 39 inches x 75 inches, full-size futons are 54 inches x 75 inches and queen-size futons are 60 inches x 80 inches. King-size futons are rare, but they usually measure 76 inches x 80 inches. To measure the depth, measure the futon from the floor to the edge of the top. Futon covers frequently list a measurement called “loft” on the package. Loft is the depth of the futon plus an inch on each side for the cover to stretch or roll over. If your futon is 4 inches deep, add 2 inches to get a total loft of 6 inches. If your futon is 8 inches deep, add 2 inches to get a total loft of 10 inches.
Pick a Material
Futon covers come in all sorts of materials, so you can pick one appropriate for your home. If you have kids or pets, a durable material, like denim, corduroy, suede or even vinyl, might be a good choice. If the futon doubles as a child’s bed, you can pick out a cover with cartoon figures, animals and other kid-friendly themes on it. To dress up a room, futon covers in satin-finish cottons, an elegant floral or paisley print, or other print that matches your home or living room decor will go well. Microfiber covers offer the feel of silk or suede fabric for much less that the real thing and are easier to clean. If you really want to go upscale, you can even find real leather futon covers.
Have a Backup
It’s a good idea to have two covers for each futon in your home, in case one gets soiled or damaged. With a backup cover, you’ll never have a bare futon; you can just switch out the covers. If you like having variety in your house, you can have two contrasting covers or even holiday-themed covers for different events.
