Everything You Should Know About Shag Rugs
What is a Shag Rug?
Shag rugs get their name from their distinctive appearance — a shaggy, uneven pile that is an inch or more. These rugs are available in a variety of colors and materials like wool, cotton, and leather. Super soft to the touch, shag rugs complement a wide range of decorating styles like contemporary, modern, or even glam.
Types of Shag Rugs
Similar to a sheepdog, Flokati is one of the fluffiest types of shag rugs. They’re usually made in Greece and are 100% wool, including the rug backing. While they’re traditionally a white or cream color, they can be dyed to more vibrant shade for added style.
Leather shag rugs offer a unique and striking look. However, leather is more delicate than other types of materials, so you’ll have to be mindful of pets, people, food, and liquid to ensure your rug has a long and happy life. Choosing a place with minimal traffic is ideal when decorating with leather rugs.
Wool is a popular material for shag rugs and is usually constructed as a “noodle” or a “shaggy” wool rug. A noodle construction features wool fibers that are twisted into noodle shapes, creating a soft, luxurious rug. For a shaggy construction, the fibers are much thinner and closer together than those of a noodle rug, making the rug a bit easier to manage and clean.
Synthetic shag rugs may not offer the same quality and lifespan as wool, but they are easier to clean and less expensive. This allows you the flexibility to try new colors and patterns more often.
Shag Rug Options
Spice up any room in your home with a colorful, shaggy rug that complements or contrasts with your furniture. Your friends and family won’t be able to resist running their fingers and toes through the plush pile, and the bright colors will bring excitement to every corner. If bright colors don’t match your room design, use a neutral shag rug for a classic, understated look.
Rectangular and square-shaped rugs are perfect for warming up smaller spaces. For larger rooms, make a statement with a large, round shag rug in the center of the room. It’s a unique way to add style and a focal point.
