Competing with treadmills as the home gym machine of choice, elliptical trainers have grown enormously in popularity since they were released in the 1990s. Designed to reduce wear on joints while still offering an excellent cardiovascular workout, elliptical trainers have gathered a dedicated following of fitness enthusiasts for a number of good reasons. When you don't use the handles, your core tenses up to maintain balance, which gives you the benefit of a core workout.

Many people report that they can burn the same amount of calories on an elliptical as on a treadmill, but without feeling like they're exerting themselves as much. Also, elliptical trainers are simply enjoyable to use. You feel like you're gliding the whole time, which is something that many people really like.
