How to Install a Shower Curtain
With all of the many different shower curtains and liners, curtain rods, rings, and hook sets, it’s easy to find the perfect shower curtain combination for your bathroom. The question now is how to set it all up once you’ve found it. Although most shower curtains are a standard size, you can also opt for slightly longer varieties, and you can always make use of differing heights of rods and use shower curtain rings to create the length you want.
Hanging a Shower Curtain:
Hang the rod.
Select a tension or spring curtain rod, both of which can be straight or curved and positioned from many heights. The tension in the springs allows the rod to remain in place without slipping under the weight of the shower curtain and liner. Measure the length of your shower curtain. For a standard 72-inch by 72-inch shower curtain and liner set, position the rod approximately 75 to 77 inches from your floor.
Attach the rings.
Use shower curtain rings to extend the length of your shower curtain by 1 to 3 inches. Opt for single rings or double rings made of plastic or metal. Standard (single) plastic rings can provide approximately 1 to 1 1/2 inches of extra length. Longer shower curtain rings can provide 2 to 3 inches of additional length. Some metal curtain rings function as “links,” meaning you can attach one ring to another for added length and style. This is a fitting option for curtain varieties that may be slightly shorter because of their design.
Hang the curtain and liner.
Position the curtain and liner so that the holes in each align perfectly from one end to the next. The wrong side of the curtain should face the liner when it hangs from the rod. Attach the rings by pushing each one through the individual holes in the shower curtain and liner. A standard 72-inch by 72-inch shower curtain should hang with at least 3 to 5 inches of length from the hem of your curtain to your floor. Adjust the shower rod and how it rests against your shower walls to change the positioning of the curtain. You can also hang your shower curtain so that it falls just to the floor without any length falling into a “pool” on your floor. For this option, measure your rod exactly 72 inches, for a standard curtain, from the floor.
