This handmade creation is offered in partnership with NOVICA, in association with National Geographic.

A mask with cat headdress pays tribute to Chaak Balam, the 'Grand Jaguar' of the ancient Maya pantheon. By Oscar Rodolfo Mendoza, this ceramic mask depicts a Maya noble, and is handcrafted with the materials and techniques of pre-Hispanic times.

    Product Features:
    • Colors: Brown, red
    • Materials: Ceramic
    • Dimensions: 7.1 high x 5.9 inches wide x 2.4 inches deep

    Story Behind the Art:
Oscar Rodolfo Mendoza says, 'I love my country and our handicrafts are a reflection of El Salvador. I'm strongly attracted to the Maya culture and pre-Hispanic ceramics. It would be a shame if this tradition were lost, so we teach new artists the ancient techniques. We don't only craft objects that are pretty. They are linked to history and the ancient Maya culture, one of the most important in the history of humanity. Despite the centuries, ours is a culture that is still alive.'

The detail on this mask is amazing. It frightens my 2 yr old granddaughter so I take it down when visits...but it is indeed lovely. Smaller than I had imagined though.

I love this mask. I have been collecting masks most of my adult life; several from the Caribbean, Mexico (west and east coasts) and local artisans. This adds nicely to that collection with its stunning detail and connection to the Mayan culture. I love that Overstock offers the Worldstock line.

The mask is lovely, though as another reviewer mentioned - it is very small! I have masks from all over the world & this one fits nicely with my collection.

    Questions & Answers

    • Q:

"Why did you choose this product?"

      • A:

I have studied the Maya civilization extensively but have not seen examples from El Salvador. I look forward to having this mask for my collection of masks; so many of them are from the Mayan culture of the Yucatan Peninsula.
