    Story Behind the Art:
The artisans of Tecalpulco, Mexico have long been known for their silver and abalone jewelry. Art Camp, short for Artesanas Campesinas or rural women artisans, is a women-owned cooperative that continues this tradition. The women have become business women, understanding the importance of customer service, quality and design. The jewelry product range includes semi-precious stones, shells or tiny flowers captured in resin accentuated by silver alloys or precious metals. The tradition of fine Mexican jewelry is present in each piece.

The length (tip of head to head of tail) is 1-1/4 inches while the width (bottom leg L-R) is 1 inch. The body itself measures 1 inches X 3/4 inch. The color is beautiful. The shell is made up of 5 stones that are inlaid to the oval. From a distance (1 foot as I sit here and type) one sees only one stone. This does not come with a necklace, so I can buy the length of necklace I wish. This item was purchased with Alpaca Silver Gemstone Teardrop Earrings (Mexico).

This turtle is cute and well made however I'm returning the poor little fellow because I just found out today that Alpaca silver CONTAINS NO SILVER! Alpaca silver contains nickel and iron etc. You should advertise this FACT.

I adore turtles since they are the only animal that in order to move forward MUST stick their neck out. This turtle is a beautiful addition to my collection. Really gorgeous colors

"what is Alpaca? How badly and or quickly does it lose its luster/"

      • A:

It is a nickel silver. Here is a great links that tells you what it is.

      • A:

Alpaca silver is a common name for a metal alloy, a combination of metals, of copper, nickel and occasionally other metals such as zinc, tin, lead or cadmium. The alloy also can be called nickel silver, German silver, new silver and paktong. It is used in a variety of manufactured commercial products, as well as in technical industries. Alpaca silver was first used in China as a substitute for sterling silver. It made its way into Europe through traded goods, where it was marketed under the name of paktong or white copper. In the 18th century, several German companies adopted the use of a similar alloy, and in 1823 a competition was held to discover which alloy was the best silver imitation. Berndorf, a German manufacturer, sold their nickel silver products under the name Alpaca silver, and the term became commonly used throughout Europe. In 1840, a process called electroplating was developed, allowing a fine metal coating to be plated onto metal and non-metal object, which opened many new markets for nickel silver-plated goods. For many years, Alpaca silver was a component in several European coins, including the Portugese escudo and the German mark. With the shift in currency to the Euro, these coins are now effectively out of circulation. A form of the alloy is also used in the U.S. nickel, although the composition of 75% copper and 25% nickel is called copper-nickel in America.
