Whether you're a fan of numerology or not, it's hard to ignore the hype surrounding today's date: 11/11/11. Not only does it only happen once a century, but it's catchy, easy to remember and poetic in its palindromic form. It's also significant in the world of numerologists; the number 11 is powerful on its own, and three together ups the ante.
While numerology is now considered to be something of a soft science, often grouped with astrology and other forms of divination, it was once a common part of mathematics. Pythagoras and other early mathematicians considered it a standard part of their studies.
So, what's so great about the number 11? It's one of the master numbers, which means that it's more powerful and has more potential than other numbers. Adding the two digits in 11 (1+1) gives you 2, and it's believed that 11 contains the same powers as the number 2, but to a greater degree. The number 11 is associated with charisma, leadership, inspiration and sensitivity. These characteristics are welcomed in a marriage, and 11/11/11 is elegant in its simplicity, so it's no surprise that today is one of this year's most popular wedding dates. It's also your penultimate chance to get married on such a date, the final chance this century is 12/12/12 (and that's a Wednesday, so it's predicted to be less popular).
More whimsical reasons for enjoying today's date include the common practice of wishing on 11:11 on digital clocks, celebrating "Nigel Tufnel Day" (he's the guitarist from "This Is Spinal Tap", famed for turning his amp past 10), and the shift from the Age of Pisces to the Age of Aquarius (accepted to be the age of information).
So, how are you going to celebrate this "ones" (ha ha) in a lifetime day? I'll crank it to 11 and make a wish!
