Carved in low relief, cool blue waves wash across the base of a grey mini djembe drum. Christopher Nyasafo recalls Anomabu beach as he sculpts the drum from tweneboa wood. The goatskin head is affixed by iron rings wrapped in cotton, and black nylon cords tighten the drumhead. The djembe originated in Benin, where it is used in traditional ceremonies and voodoo rituals; today it appears in reggae groups the world over.

    Story Behind the Art:
I am a friendly but firm, hardworking and a trust worthy person. My name is Christopher Nyasafo. I was bord in Accra in 1965. Growing up in Madina-Accra was where I developed the passion for woodcarving. I started by helping in other things outside the workshop, duties like running errands for them. I eventually started working in the shop by cutting logs of wood, sanding and finishing. I continued till I completed my secondary school. I furthered my education to do my first degree in business studies because I knew that with education I could do more as I got deep into the art work. I was taught by many masters like Louis Botchway, Mr. Ezi, Peter Ampah, and Sinclair. I am able to make sculptures, masks and musical instruments. I have six assistants who learn other techniques of work from me and I am hoping to admit beginners who are willing to learn because, without the willingness and interest, they can't sustain the work. I mastered this craft by being willing to serve my masters, working hard and being trustworthy and my seriousness helped me. My inspiration comes from the environment, colors and other great artistes. The materials I used are osese wood, soot, cola nuts and acrylic paints. My craft has been a source of income to my assistants who are now taking care of their homes and children, food vendors come to sell to my workers also and the remaining scraps of wood are used as a source of fire wood for those who can't afford to buy charcoal or gas. The only family member of my company is the director, who knows nothing about craft but deals with the farming department and helps plan and take decision. My embarrassing moments was when I had to go to Burkina Faso to learn about their drum making. My hope is to establish a modern workshop outside Accra to accommodate and train the youth interested in craft. My dream is to establish a farm which will be the main source of my raw materials.
