This was the biggest hit of my grandson's 3rd birthday! He loves it! (and Grandpa does too) The set helps with imagaination. Lots of HAMMERING! Which is a little tough on Grandma's ears. Ha! But well worth the price over something plastic. Trust me, they will love it. We had one piece that came that needed to be replaced. Called customer service. They sent replacement piece without batting an eye. Great representative and wonderful product. 5 stars

Although this children work bench is extremely sturdy I feel it was a bit challenging to put together. I ended up putting thin wood strips under the top pieces in order for the top planks to lie flush with each other. I think improvements could be made with the addition of actual interactive pieces attached to the work bench top such as screws that had actual holes for bolts to be screwed in. As it is to use the bolts you generally have to use two hands ( one to hold the bolt and one to screw the bolt into the hole) This takes more developed small motor skills where as a grooved bold slot would allow kids to use the screwdriver and bolt with one hand. If the bolt and nut are connected as they are now they simply flop around in the predrilled hole on the tabletop. A child would have to reach under the table top and hold the nut while screwing the bolt on top of the workbench, A bit tricky. This is a very strong activity set. I actually saw a video advertising this where an adult stood on top of the workbench and it held their weight. In hind site I find myself looking for something else on the internet to add to this in order for my granddaughter to use this and gradually grow into the more difficult aspects. A carpenters apron with pockets and even a marked ruler wood be a nice addition. This bench is mostly plain wood colored. Addition of bright colored sections would also be more appealing to kids.

This item has lived through my 4 year old and a move where grown men stood on it (they left boot prints behind). I've had it for a couple years and it's still going strong. I removed one star because the instructions could be clearer for the projects.

I thought my son would love this, but actually at 3 years old it was way too advanced for him. By the time he was old enough for it- he was not into tools anymore.

    • The neighbors come to build, too!
      Reviewed at

My 6 yr old son got this for Christmas, LOVED putting it together (with parental help), took off flying with the booklet of models to make with the wooden pieces, bolts, screws, etc., and quickly began making designs of his own. His twin sister and our neighbors' children all love playing with this, too. The boys have been making everything in the project book, and some unidentified objects as well. The girls have loved this , too, but have wished that there were also project designs to make baby crib, stroller, high chair kinds of things . I'm not sure the designers anticipated this sort of interest from the girls, but it really is a big hit with mine and my neighbors'. I encountered one problem; the wooden screw on the front-mounted vice grip splintered out and broke from the repeated torque. The company cheerfully replaced the whole section quickly and at no cost. I did suggest a redesign of that particular screw of a more durable material able to stand up to the repeated twisting and pressure.I also suggested that they begin to offer supplemental design books and sets of extra building pieces. All things considered, I love this, would give it as a gift or buy is all over again.

    • Fantastic toy... but boy focused.
      Reviewed at

I am absolutely impressed by this toy. It is well designed, well manufactured, was easy to put together. It is fun. My daughter enjoyed putting together the workbench and making the robot together today. The only reason I've given it four stars is a lack of girl-friendliness. The picture of the boy on the front lead her to ask "Is this just for boys?". Also, the projects aren't girl-friendly. Should M+D make a girl-friendly add-on available, whether it be a kit or just a project book, we'd buy it in a pinch. One other small suggestion: We wish it was compatible with the toolkit, which we also bought for our littler one expecting them to be compatible. It's not a far stretch... the parts are almost identical - It's just the bolt sizes and threading that are slightly different. These are small things - We will get much fun, and enrichment from this toy. We spent around $70CDN for this toy, and I feel I got good value for our money. Already, I can see my daughter's tactile and mechanical skills developing. And she loves it.

It is great to see the delight in your child's face as the project is complete. However only one project can be constructed at one time so each project that is made has to be taken apart. Wish you can buy extra pieces as I would purchase more.

My grandson loves this workbench and this easily became his favorite christmas gift. He and his little friend use the tools all the time for pretending to work on their little cars. So well put together it will last a lifetime.

This is a nice looking workbench set, doesn't look terrible sitting in my family room. I bought it for my 3 yr old and he loves it. The projects that come with it are a little advanced for a 3 yr old to do on his own.
