most available reviews of this knife point out two 'flaws' * the short, wide handle * the short, stiff clip i feel like most people that write knife reviews expect all good knives to be for stabbing and brandishing like one were some sort of urban nija warrior -- that is not the purpose of this knife. i have large hands (i'm 6'3"" 200+ lbs if that gives you an idea) and this is not at all too small nor too bulky of a handle. the handle is about the girth of an ordinary utility knife, and designed to be held comfortably in a position for paring, precise cutting or ripping motions. for that purpose, it fits great, and the bulk makes it easier to hold and use for a long period of time. don't hold it like you are going to stab someone with some fake kung fu posture, but like you are going to use it for an everyday task - and it fits just right. the clip, yes, is short and stiff, but functional and will loosen up after a little use. some complain it 'rides to high in the pocket' but this isn't so - about 3/8" of the handle is exposed above the pocket line, and if you have a knife clipped to your pocket, it is for easy access, not to hide the fact that you have a knife clipped to your pocket. to that end, no big deal. the overall closed length is such that it fits comfortably in a pocket. this knife has a 3", thin, straight blade that is easy to sharpen, hods an edge for a long time and is perfect for all tasks that a boxcutter, paring knife, utility blade or other functional non-fighting knife might be used for. any determined person could defend themselves with a stick or a rock - of course in a pinch you could do the same with this. for the price point, there are few other pocketknives as well made and designed for the nuts-and-bolts sort of things that an every-day-carry pocketknife is actually used for. made in america with strong steel and a very respectable pedigree, i recommend this to anyone who ACTUALLY USES a knife to perform tasks. if you want something to look cool and stand in front of the mirror with, there are plenty of other choices. the opening mechanism is quite fast but does take a reasonable effort to initiate. that's something to keep in mid however if you have this in your pocket - you may want to take it out before rolling around on the ground as it may be possible to spring open while in your pocket if given a hard thump in just the right place. to me, that is the only serious drawback - not enough to be wary of carrying it, but to be careful to remove it from my jeans before i play football or crawl under a table and thrash around on the ground. apart from the possible danger ( which i am not worried about honestly ) the opening mechanism is quite satisfying and reliable. closing it takes a little getting used to as the locking mechanism is small and recessed in the handle - but this also means you won't be accidentally closing it while using it. using it - as i said - is natural and satisfying. it fits just right for tasks such as whittling, opening packages, paring apples, cutting flowers or vines, slicing fruit, scribing lines, stripping bark, making small, accurate cuts in plastic or balsa wood for a model, etc. NOT for stabbing, hacking, slashing and doing karate videos for youtube. a perfect replacement for a utility knife/boxcutter with replaceable blades that can easily do all the work of a paring knife and an x-acto blade at the same time that will also serve well to cut ropes, vines, seatbelts, you name it. great little number you've made here Kershaw! if you need a knife for work - this needswork is just the thing.
