I have worn it with and without the shoulder harness, and as a fanny pack and back pack. I can carry all my wife and I need for a day of birding or hiking. Very pleased.
This is a very good medium size pack. Redesigned for 2013 to have a smaller bottom fold out pocket for the bow or gun. Skeptical at first but the smaller pouch with cinch strap does work really well for the bow. Have not used it with the rifle yet.
I was looking for a better style of camouflage backpack to carry a camera with a large telephoto lens into the field for wildlife photography. I looked at many different kinds of bags/packs and virtually all were the same basic backpack design. I did not want the standard design because the camera and lens would end up at the bottom of the bag and be a struggle to pull out, especially if there were other items in the bag. Not this Big Bear Pack. The main compartment measures 17" long by 6"' deep by 8" tall. My Canon 5D with the new telephoto attached measures 17" and fits perfectly and snuggly inside and is easily pulled out. The camera does not shift around while I walk. The forward pouch then holds my other smaller lens. I keep the top of the pack rolled down until it starts to get warm; then roll up the upper part of the back and I can peel off my jacket or sweater and put it into the separate upper part to keep my hands free, without interfering with pulling the camera out. The harness is very comfortable and well designed to balance the weight of the pack
