I had zero experience with baitcasting reels but wanted to step up and start using them due to the obvious advantages. I did a lot of research and bought this reel. It is excellent. I have had zero backlashes by properly setting up the spool tension and magnetic brake. Those two controls (especially the magnetic brake) allow for a great deal of fine tuning on your casts. Casting consistently past your target?? Dial in a click or two more on the magnet and that nicely reigns it in. Also, due to this reel having 10 bearings, the casting and retrieval are SUPER smooth. Buttery! Pros: 1. Anti-reverse. You set the hook, and there is no reverse at all in the spool. You won't miss a fish because of the reel. Critical for when the bite is picky. 2. Adjustability. 3. Weight/comfort. This thing is super light so it won't throw off the balance of the rod. Very comfortable when palming as well. 4. Price. I don't think you'll find a better quality reel at this price point. Cons: The only minor gripe I have is the spool tension knob is a bit tricky to get just right. It's very tight so finding the sweet spot is a bit tough to nail...but once it is set properly, it won't "self-adjust." And you shouldn't have to be adjusting much anyway unless you're throwing lures with vastly different weights.
This is actually my 2nd Okuma trio spinning reel. I was so impressed with the first one, I bought the second one- going a size larger. I have used all kinds of spinning reels over the past 50 years of fishing and yes- high end reels too. This reel is hands down, the smoothest, most durable and reliable reel I have ever used. From trout to lunker catfish. AND- you can't beat the price here on Overstock.
