I've been a MountainSmith Lumbar Day Pack woman for several years now. These packs are the best around. I usually have to go to the hospital a lot as a pain patient. So, this pack comes in handy; it's holds everything for me and doesn't hurt my shoulders or back. The price might be a bit high but it's worth it. I love these packs!!
Carries as nicely as any messenger using the supplied shoulder strap. Tons of room (think Jansport Classic type of room). Loads more like a backpack than a messenger due to the taller size. Does great as a lumbar pack; barely feel the weight at all (my test cargo weighed in at 13 lbs). The straps on the bottom are good to hold a windbreaker type jacket, small light tarp, etc. while the front shock cord can also hold about the same. If you intend to load this out to capacity, the Mountainsmith Srappettes would be a great add on. I use this pack for both my work commute and for hiking so far; I've had a load out for a light overnighter but haven't had the weather to try it out yet (you're not taking your sleeping bag or wool blanket with this pack). I'm happy to say it's completely at home in the woods or the city.
This bag is awesome! I'm a research tech and I do lots of lab and field work. I use it as my everyday "purse" and its wonderful. No issues with the zippers or the bag liner. I do have one small problem with it, and it is that there is a lot of excess strap material so it is a one size fits all, but I'm a fairly small person so I have long excess ties kind of hanging around. This is not helpful when running through wild blueberry patches to catch bugs. Other than that its great! No issues with water penetrating in the rain as well. I would buy another one its that good.
