The frame on my Gary Fisher Paragon (2005) hard-tail MTB developed a massive crack at the base of the seat tube. Aluminum frames are brittle and when the fail, they are not usually worth fixing. Since I'm a big rider ( Clyde), I wanted to see if I could keep the good parts and put them on a chromoly frame, which is much stronger. A steel alloy is also heavier, but if it fails it can be fixed, and it rides smoother than Al. It's not easy to find a good steel frame, but this one is large enough and at a very good price. I was able to swap over the Reba forks, which are a 1-1/8" steerer in a cane creek press-in headset. It all fits perfectly. I had to ditch a spacer since the headtube is longer on this frame. The bottom bracket was compatible with my bottom bracket: (Truvative Giga Pipe (113mm spindle, 73mm shell / 68mm + spacer) - ISIS type spline - English thread). In general the steel is much thinner than Al, which needs to be thick to get the strength. I needed some washers for the disc brake mount bolts, and I needed to create a shim for the front derailleur clamp/mount because the seat tube is only 30.0mm. The cable guides are setup for more of a road bike, routing cables under the bottom bracket. I have a top-pull front derailleur and I don't want to crush my cables, so I needed to get some stick-on guides to route under the top bar, like the original frame. Also the bigger frame cause the old shift cabling to come up a bit sort, so I put new in a new XL cabling kit that came with longer cables. I also needed to buy a 30.0mm seat clamp, since the Al frame was thicker (34.9mm) So, I needed to invest a bit more to make it work the way I wanted, but the frame itself was very compatible with the old, cracked frame and it looks nice. No more cracked frames for me!
