I'd say this is overall 3 1/2 stars but I'll say 3. It's easy to assemble and fold down however the base gets very hot after using and starts to make an awful squeaking noise approximately 8 minutes into my routine. It does tend to slide (even on carpet) so I have to put the edge against a heavy piece of furniture but overall, it does the job. Periodically I do have to adjust the tension because it seems to loosen up after a few minutes but it is fairly sturdy and the pedals move well.
It was crazy hard to put together. I'm good at building furniture and stuff, and this was very tough. The magnetic tightener thing was close to impossible. It still seem loose actually. It is kind of creaky when you ride it. I am 5'7" and it really gives very little resistance, and the stride is a bit short for my height. It's okay, for a hundred dollars you really aren't going to get much better. I don't see it lasting for that long though. It's not a super high quality machine, but what can you do.
The reviews didn't prepare me for this monster *** box that was dumped on my lawn. The delivery service understandably did not want to drag the pallet over bricks on my walkway so I was stuck with this immovable box on my lawn for two nights until I got a hand truck and two strong people to help move it downstairs. It is HUGE and even opening the box and removing a few small pieces doesn't lighten the load much. BE PREPARED to deal with that! As for assembly, the handbook is very clear but it's 16 pages of step by step assembly. Because of all of the electrical connections and sensitive pieces, I ended up hiring someone. Hire someone who has experience assembling electrical exercise equipment. this is NOT a piece of furniture, it's complex. It took an experienced assembler about 90 minutes to put it together. Finally, you will need a very specific surge suppressor for this piece. It took me multiple searches to find one that matches the specifications. This review is written before I have even set foot on the machine because if I had known about the problems with moving it and assembling it, I probably would have gone with something else. All said and done, it cost another *** to get it moved and assembled.
Besides being compact, the stepper comes almost completely assembled so there is very little to do in the way of putting it together. I am 61 and this is a good, low impact way for me to work out. Since I have tendonitis in my right Achilles tendon, I can use this machine without the usual pain and difficulty associated with most machines. Just put it close to a wall or heavy piece of furniture if your balance is poor, and there you go. The cost at Overstock was extremely reasonable and delivery was very quick. I don't think there is anything negative I can say. I'm extremely happy with my purchase and use it daily.
