My wife and I wanted to own about 6 chickens in our backyard this year and looked around for a chicken coop that would hold that many. Unfortunately most of them only accommodated 2-3 at best until we saw this one on Overstock. We were very excited about getting this coop that seemed to be the perfect match for what we wanted. That is, until we got it delivered to us. I will compliment Overstock for the speed that they shipped it to us (about three days) and the packaging was outstanding in two boxes. But that's where the good part ended and our nightmare began. Getting all the pieces out of the box, we immediately noticed the materials were very cheap looking with major cracks in just about every single piece. I went down to the hardware store to buy some wood glue to help patch things up, but it was disastrous. Our problems didn't stop there. The screws weren't clearly marked for where they should be used and there was no "this side up" indications anywhere on these parts. You were kinda left to your own devices to figure it all out and many times we put things on the wrong way and had to unscrew everything. To make matters worse, they might as well have included no instructions on putting this thing together because the directions were worse than useless. After about six hours of toiling through all of this headache, it's finally put together. The thing is a LOT smaller than it appears in that stock photo on Overstock, by the way. Buyer beware. I can see maybe 4 chickens fitting in this thing, but we shall see. To say I'm disappointed is a major understatement. If you're gonna spend $400+ on a chicken coop, then you deserve something a helluva lot better than this. I think Overstock should refund me at least half of the cost of this for the aggravation of dealing with their ineptitude in making this kind of product available. There needs to be major warning signs for the people who consider purchasing this or the price needs to reflect the lack of quality this coop really is. You can't say you haven't been warned.

    • Smaller than you think

We needed a quick and easy coop for our breeding bantams, seems to be working so far for the 2 pairs. I don't think we could fit any more chickens humanely. Unit is very small, the online pictures are deceiving. The unit arrived with some shipping damage, but there was no way I was going to re-pack all the parts to send back. Very flimsy construction from our friends in China, Assembly was pretty easy, hence the 2 stars. Needed to repair busted wood with glue as I went along. Used a cordless impact gun for most of the build being very careful not to over torque any fasteners to cause any more damage to the very fragile pieces.

This is exactly what it says it is. It was easy to assemble. My chicks are happy. The roost box is small, but chickens like to clump. It's easy to clean, a big bonus.

If your chickens will be staying in the coop all the time, I would not have more than 2 chickens in the coop. If your chickens are let out to roam freely or in a larger space, then this coop will hold/sleep 4 chickens comfortably. The coop arrived in two boxes, one box one day, the other box the next day. Before you begin putting this together find the instructions. Our instructions were inside the plastic bag between the bolts and screws. Several pieces were either broken or cracked because of poor packaging. We were able to fix all of them with wood glue and nail brads. First read the instructions to familiarize yourself with each part. Then lay them out. Be sure to look closely at the instructions, which are pictures and pay attention to how each part is labeled on the instructions. Look closely at the screws on the instructions and make sure you match the screws with the corresponding letter. Otherwise, you will use the screws in the wrong places and end up with a big headache. Some pieces have holes to be attached to pieces that have nubs that go into the holes. Pay attention so you don't get the sides on backward. If they are on backward the drawer will not be able to go in and you will have to unscrew it and turn the parts around. We found out the hard way. When putting the middle section together, be sure to not turn the pieces upside down. Again, some pieces have holes and others have nubs to insert into the holes. Also, if the part is upside down, you will not have a hole to put the rest that has a nub into. This rest is to hold the steps that goes into the coop off the ground. We also placed our coop on treated lumber and screwed the frame of the coop into the lumber. We did this to help hold the coop down in a strong wind and to hopefully help keep the wood from rotting any time soon. The whole coop was then placed on concrete blocks. Some have said in reviews that this takes about an hour to put together. It took us several hours to put together because we had broken pieces that we had to glue and nail brad back together. We also allowed the pieces to stay outside the box for a few days so the smell of formaldehyde was gone when we put it together. Some said in these reviews their chickens wouldn't go into the coop because of the smell. So, if your smell bad, air it out for a few days. Our chickens were curious and inspected the coop fairly quickly and slept in the coop the very first night and every night since. This coop would also be good for a small pet-cat, dog, etc. if you would like for them to get fresh air and yet be able to keep them safe and to keep them from wandering off. I gave this 3 stars because of all the broken and cracked pieces that were in the boxes I would suggest better packaging so that the pieces don't get broken and cracked in shipping. I hope this review helps others when making a decision on whether or not to purchase this item. And I hope it helps the manufacture in paying more attention to the packaging of this product.

What is the world coming to! *** for $35 worth of wood? This is poorly constructed, poor quality and extremely high priced. What were these people smoking when they priced this? Getting tired of the junk coming from China that doesn't last. Buy American made! Americans have more pride, honor and wouldn't cheat people with junk like this!

This coop is beautiful but came with broken and chipped peices. The instructions were...ok...but no peices were identified (ie...left side, this peice faces up...etc) overall I feel as that I paid more than I should have.

    Questions & Answers

    • Q:

"Is this coop heavy enough to stay upright in a strong windstorm? Or does it need to be staked to the ground?"

      • A:

The chicken coop would remain standing unless it was a pretty large wind storm to knock it over. If it was placed up against another building or even staked down that would most certainly help contain it.

    • Q:

"Why did you choose this product?"

      • A:

It fits the criteria I have for having up to 6 chickens.

      • A:

        Price and value

      • A:

Fits our needs for 6 chickens and good size for our yard..
