This book case is quite heavy, made of particle board with a fake wood veneer. The back, which nails on, is made of cardboard. Without nailing this in place the case doesn't stay square. The one shelf sets on top of four small pegs with small rubbery guards on them so it can pull right out. For the money it's ok but not a real piece of furniture per se.
This is a nice book case. It is solid and looks great in my sewing room. My husband had to assemble it; but that only took a few minutes. Everything arrived intact without blemish. I was worried that a steel book case would look out of place in a room of black wood furnishings; but it fits right in and holds a ton of books.
The book case is perfect for the space where I wanted to put it. It seems sturdy. I have put together eight other pieces of furniture, but this one gave me trouble. The holes all matched up, but the directions were strange. I finally just went with what I instinctively knew should happen. But someone putting one together for the first time, might have trouble. However, it went together and it is still standing, so all is well.
