This Tuareg Cross, also known as the Agadez cross, is one of a series modeled after the symbolic artisan silver work of the Tuareg tribes of Africa. The Tuaregs are a traditionally nomadic people who still inhabit much of the Sahara desert. These "Blue Men of the desert" are a people known for their fighting abilities & exquisite metal work, leather work and sword making. They call themselves Imohag, translated as free men. Accordingly, among the Tuareg society, the women have a great freedom and participate in family and tribal decisions. Descent and inheritance are both through the maternal line. We have chosen to cast these using a white brass alloy that gains an interesting patina similar to antique silver as it ages and is worn. The Agadez cross have been cast using the lost wax method since the sixteenth century and were called Zakatan in their native language in which the word for cross refers to the four directions or cardinal points of the compass.Tuareg crosses were given to young adults at puberty by their parents as a coming of age gift, when a family member matures and is free to travel anywhere they wish. The four points of the cross represent the four corners of the world.

Each Tuareg Cross comes packed in a box with a card describing the story behind it making it ideal as a parting gift for significant people in your life as they set off on their journeys.
This cross is roughly 1.85 inches wide (47mm) and 3.2 inches long (82mm). It comes on a 20 inch chain.

Every necklace ships in a reusable gift box to keep it safe in transit.

The handcrafted touch of artisan skill creates variations in color, size and design. If buying two of the same item, slight differences should be expected.
