Story Behind the Art:-
Hello, my name is Chander Kant and I was born and brought up in Bahadugarg town in Haryana. Bahudugarg is a small town situated in Delhi Haryana border.I studied till 10th standard and after which I joined my family's traditional craft work. Ours is a joined family and we grew up with strong bonding. All my family members are involved in carving. In fact my father, grandfather, my uncle are all recipient of the National Award for excellence in hand crafted products. This family tradition craft work has been passed on from generation to generation. My father was actually an ivory craftsman and what exquisite piece of art he used to make. In fact he got his National Award for his excellence in Ivory craft. But sadly when the Govt of India banned the trade of ivory in 1991, my father had to hand over all the treasure of ivory craft he crafted over to the Govt of India. But since he also had a good hand in carving already, he shifted his material to wood. My father use to tell me, carving ivory is more tedious than wood carving. I learned my craft from my father. As I child I use to see my father and uncle craft beautiful sculptures. Everyone use to work at home together. It was fun to see. Though I technically learned the craft from my grandfather. In 1990, the Govt started a training skill program for one year to young artisans. My grandfather was the trainer there. I also got enrolled in the training progm after my 10th Standard. It was great learning experience. Although, I already knew the knowhow of crafting, it was only during these training that I actually got interested and decided to join my family. We make all kinds of sculptures including wooden jewelries. Although jewelry are really fast moving items, my personal interest still lies in carving intricate sculptures. All my family including my four brothers are involved in this craft and we love doing this art work. In 2009, I was selected by the Oman govt to be a part of their training progm. I went there as a trainer for one year and it was a great experience. I also got opportunity to participated in govt sponsored exhibitions in Austria, Iran. Apart from these international fair, I have travelled all over India to participate in many govt sponsored exhibitions.
