    Story Behind the Art:
Juliana Akandas is happily married with three children. 'I became interested in Ghanaian carvings while working as a secretary. My job took me to their workshops and showrooms and I got to know almost every carver in the country. I had the opportunity to study various pieces, methods and finishes, as well as their meanings. My favorite piece is the Akuabaa doll. In Ghana's Akan tribe, the doll represents fertility. It is believed that, when given this doll, a barren woman is likely to get pregnant. The doll is also a symbol of twins, and each one receives an Akuabaa so, if one dies, the doll is brought out during the twin festival in remembrance of the dead twin. I was so fascinated with all this, I decided to learn the trade, and did so through a carver in Aburi. Today, almost all my masks are created with a meaning and a history behind them.'

Very nicely done. It is a real wood carving. Exotic and unusual. The artist took the time to do the work. It is a huge mask and is fairly heavy. Be prepared to figure out how to hang it. I had hook to hold on the black and white loop of the mask and a small support at the bottom of the mask to distribute its weight. I did not use the leather loop behind the mask as I am concern that it may break after some time. The textured surface below the square eye at the nose area is actually metal. Again nice work. The packaging that it came in was done with lots of care. Love the work ethics.
