Electronic sensor knows when your had is nearby and you never have to touch the unit - the top magically glides open - you drop your trash in and step away and the top glides smoothly down and closes without a sound. The unit is perfectly sized for my apartment and keeps my dog out of the trash. It can sit out in the open but not look like a yukky open top garbage pail. This unit takes a 13 gallon trash bag and includes a nice ring that tucks the bag down inside for a terrific clean look, It takes D cell batteries (x4) or you can buy a plug in adapter separately (it doesn't come with the can tho so plan on using batteries or paying separately for the transformer (manufacturer approved transformer only.) It does occasionally open when you walk by but it is silent so it isn;t a big deal.
Trash cans are Ok .you get what you pay for with these. the larger one has kind of a small opening and runs out of battery quick. Also food gets all stuck on the top sometimes and can be hard to clean and not get the battery area wet. The smaller on take 2 D batteries and last a long time and is a great lil trash or recycle bin.
Can you say that a trash can is well engineered? I think so. I've had the cans about 2 months in my newly renovated kitchen. Aside from looking incredible, they work great. We have one with the swing top for recyclables and one with a touch top for trash. Their size is great too, trash only goes out once every week or more (we compost food waste). They did require minimal assembly that wasn't particularly intuitive, but a minor inconvenience compared to the compliments I keep getting from guests. Yes, these are so nice and distinct that guests actually comment on how nice my kitchen trash cans look!
