Needed the exact size stainless top for something else so purchased this. Worked out perfectly with the bonus of the bottom shelf for something else. Good quality and great packaging.
While these are not the same as 'the old red toolbox' that your dad had, they are a good bargain for the price. The steel stock is slightly less thick than the 'old school' metal boxes, so falling from a height with tols in is will certainly deform the corners, but I do not plan on dropping it. I bought this when I could not find a good metal tool box for my electronics tools at any of the chain stores in my town. I specifically wanted metal because the previous two have been plastic and both have broken easily, making another plastic toolbox seem like a bad idea. This tool box is not too large for storing, but it is bigger and is much sturdier than its plastic predecessor. The tray is well made and fits in the box without a struggle, and the dual front latches work very well. If I have any reservations at all it is that The hinges are a tad flimsy, so I take care not to bump the top when it is open. I cannot complain too much about the hinges though, as they are certainly better than the plastic junk made on most big box store tool boxes.
Overall, this is a very nice product. It is sturdy, and locks up. The drawer slides do have 'detents', so they will stay closed without drifting open, even without being locked. I saw one review where someone said that this wouldn't hold 'real' tools - I suspect they were referring to the height of the drawers. Since it isn't shown in the specs, most drawers will hold items 1 7/8" tall. The bottom drawer will hold items about 2 7/8" tall. It works great as a top box for a tool chest, if you are going to use it as a portable box you should probably check the dimensions to make sure your tools will fit OK. The drawers can only be opened if the top lid is open (up). There are 2 locking bars that move downward when the top closes that lock in drawers. You can remove these lockbars if you want - I did because this box sits in my garage and doesn't need to be locked. Just push out the hinge pins and pull the bars out. It comes with drawer liners in the drawers, but not in the top section. I'd recommend this tool box, overall it is very nice and worth the money. Packaging was very good, mine had no damage in transit.
