  • pretty, not that hard to assemble

This review is probably irrelevant because this item is no longer made, but we like it. Self-assembly furniture can be challenging but I, a middle-aged modestly handy woman, was able to do most of it myself with a manual screwdriver in about 4 hours, with 1 hour's worth of my husband's time. The directions were quite good relative to other furniture I've assembled. The desk looks really nice in our bedroom along with the matching Aspen dining chair, Aspen pantry, and some quartersawn Mission oak pieces in a cherry finish (very good match). Ours came without any flaws or damage but it's a little distressed so any dings it develops over time will probably blend right in with the use of a brown Sharpie. The design of this desk is really clever, it has a tremendous amount of storage, and it's a space saver. It puzzles me why they stopped making it. On carpeting, we have to struggle a bit to pull it out, which makes me nervous that we might break it, but this isn't a desk we use every day. It's a really nice piece if you're willing to take the time to put it together.

I'm no novice with assembly, but this experience was a nightmare. Pieces were slightly off size, some were supposed to be placed together didn't have drill marks to help properly align, many didn't fit well together and multiple pieces were slightly damaged and/or off color. After hours of muddling through all of the assembly, two of the three drawers didn't fit properly (the bottom drawer didn't fit at all). I've spent tens of thousands of dollars shopping from Overstock and this is my first complaint. Despite having to disassemble this piece and finding another box to ship it back, it's being returned.
