Story Behind the Art:-
I'm Jon Stuart Anderson, I am 56 and a single with no child. I suppose the atelier is my child. I grew up all over the U.S.A. , Mexico , Venezuela and Costa Rica. My Father was always looking to the horizon and was insatiably curious. During my time with my family I was exposed to a variety of arts and crafts. Influences that stand out are Frank Lloyd Wright, Native American art, the wildlife sculptures of my Mother and pre-Columbian art of Meso America. I learned how to make my own tools for working with clay from bamboo in Veracruz Mexico from a girlfriend. I take a great amount of pride making things by hand and keep grinders and such out of my atelier. Each member of my family is or was an artist , potter, sculptor, painter⦠you name it, that's how we made our living. The first piece I can clearly recall making is a terracotta pony when I was 3 years old. My grandfather was a fine jeweler. I now work in polymer clay exclusively and feel blessed to have found a medium I can honestly say I was born for. I learned how to work with PC (polymer clay) from a book by Nan Roche titled "The New Clay". I've had no formal PC instruction beyond that, and drew on past experience more than anything. I began making jewelry components for Robert Shields Design in 1991. I quickly developed a voice of my own with this medium and began making and selling my work on my own. PC is a post war medium that is still being defined and finding it's place in the art world. I can say with confidence that I am considered one of the most innovative and accomplished practitioners of this medium. A friend recognized my potential and set me up with a studio in Bali Indonesia in 1993. As there is no other PC atelier I know of in Bali, I guarantee full employment with medical coverage to all serious employees. We pay for most aspects of everyone life. What the artisans learn here has no application any where else so I feel bound to let them know they are secure in every way I can. I make mainly animal sculptures that are covered in a dermis of Polymer Clay, it is a form of unpolymerized plastic made by Mars Staedler in Germany and distributed in Jakarta. It is not possible to explain the complexities of working with a non terrestrial clay, it is very demanding. We use all of our scrap to make the armatures of the animal sculptures. It is also made into toys like yo-yos but on a very small level.PC has become a popular medium and I think that at least 95% of it is made into jewelry. Most of it is used as a home craft product.
