I actually purchased these as a gift, but kept them because they are so cute. The fabric is strong & thick with tiny ridges in it. The design is a nice plaid with great colors, and goes with many types of decor ranging from country to modern. I am using these with grey plates & they look fabulous, but I could also see them with blue, white, green, yellow, brown, black or many other colors of dinnerware as well.
These mats helped turn my kitchen into a true "dining room." The deep blue & white white mottled-, woven look has the appeal of a French farmhouse. From a practical standpoint, they don't show the signs of a messy eater (at least for a view meals.) When they eventually need cleaning, I put them in the washer in cool or warm water, then line dry (They are 100% cotton.) The only draw back, is that usually found with any natural fiber; the edges tend to curl a bit. Given the pluses I can live with this minus. My family does not notice. If the President planned a visit I might go so far as to iron them. To be truthful, however, I might just weigh the edges down with cutlery, or do nothing at all. I guess you could tell, I'm very satisfied with my purchase and hope you will be as well.
The placemats were stunning however, I had to return them "twice" due to poor packaging and damage. The second set was shipped so badly, the placemats were actually stuck to the outside packaging. I decided to get a refund.
