Umbrella set-up: 15 minutes Filling base with sand: 2 hours Ok, I've exaggerated the sand part. But pouring 30 pounds of sand into a small hole in the base was the most mind-numbing activity I've experienced in a long time. I found it helped to prop the base up on something so that the sand would actually sift down and away from the hole, requiring less jiggling between fills. I had a perfect wide-mouth funnel for the job, but it would have been much easier had I poured the sand into a wheel barrow or similar container and let it dry out a bit first. Bagged sand is always damp, just enough for it to clump together, and that made the job slow and tedious. The other key to filling the base is to make sure you are filling it where you ultimately want it to sit, because it's unlikely you will want (or be able) to move it again soon. I measured out the umbrella dimensions carefully to ensure the base was positioned properly before filling, and I didn't add the water until I had at least once opened the umbrella fully. The other caution I would give is regarding the post that screws into the base. I studied the picture and scoured the brief text, but nowhere did the directions indicate there was a front and back to the post. I guess I should have looked more carefully and noticed the screw hole in the front. This is pretty critical, because the post has a slight cant to it (~10 degrees or so), which was indiscernible to me when I was initially setting it up (and it was the end of the day and I was in a hurry...) This cant becomes really obvious once the umbrella is attached, as the support pole should lean slightly backwards to offset the weight of the umbrella. Of course if you've connected it backwards, the umbrella will hang forward at a precarious angle. This was a detail I admit I should have noticed, but was really surprised there was no reference in the slim documentation. So be forewarned. Other than my own error, it was fairly easy to assemble. I'm 5'3" and 120 lbs, but managed to lift the post into place (twice - once incorrectly and once correctly) and get it assembled alone. However, I didn't anticipate the crank would be so high on the post, so at aforementioned height, I had to stand on the base to open the umbrella (and hopefully the aforementioned weight doesn't result in the tragic demise of my base). It's a beautiful umbrella, and covers the seating portion of my deck perfectly. I'm a little disappointed that the canopy only angles towards the post, as I really wanted the post next to the house versus in the middle of the deck, and with my deck's orientation north to south, completely limits the usefulness of the tilt function. Placing the base is the biggest strategic decision required with this, as it is enormous, and you'll need to weigh the benefits of placing it somewhere people won't trip over it versus placing it somewhere the canopy has optimal coverage in relation to the sun. But I tend to overthink things ;-) The true test now will be the wind - if it holds up to coastal wind, I will be very happy. I did place my old iron umbrella base on top of the plastic base for good measure, and have observed canopy movement but no shifting in the base yet. I am concerned about how I deal with this come winter, as draining a base full of sandy water doesn't sound like something I want to do all over my deck. I don't know if it is weatherproof with respect to freezing temperatures, but I guess I will find that out. In the meanwhile, I have a great new "room" on the deck to hang out in.

We ordered this Canopy Umbrella w/base over the holidays, so it is new to us, December 2017. It was relatively easy to put together (missing a few washers, but not big deal). We read many reviews ahead of time which were very helpful, especially the one about inserting the post into the base slot correctly with the slant slightly leaning backwards! It is not that obvious but really will make a difference if inserted improperly. The directions do not state this, so the review that we read was most helpful. Yes, the part that truly took the longest was filling the small hole with DRY sand and a funnel does not work. Remember to measure where the canopy will reach once it is fully opened (on all 4 sides) so that it does not hit the house, bushes, etc., as it will be difficult (if possible to move the base once it is filled with sand and water). Living in S. Florida with the tropical winds we felt it was necessary to fill it as instructed. The Canopy fully covers our two large chairs, coffee table and love seat and it is wonderful that it can be rotated (depending on the season and time of day to keep all the furniture out of the sun). We found that if you do rotate it slightly, when it comes time to putting it back to it's original position, it does NOT rotate in reverse, you have to rotate all the way around to get it back to the front. While doing that we found that it will hit our fence in the back, but all we have to do is close it part-way using the crank the rotate it full circle back to the front. No biggie, but take that into consideration. The stand and post are VERY stable and the umbrella has a slight movement with the breeze, but not concerning at all. The fabric is very strong. It can be kept fully closed when not in use and had a handy (wide) velcro strap attached for convenient closure. Very pleased thus far. I only gave it a 4 star rating because I feel the directions could be a little better, it would be nice if the base could be moved (maybe have wheels) and would be more convenient if it could rotate in both directions. All in all, sturdy, stable and affordable! Very happy so far.

This umbrella is easy to assemble, although I'd really like to see another way to insert 100+ lbs of sand into the base other than through a 2 1/2" diameter hole! Also - be sure you take note of the fact the umbrella tilts only toward the base (and not side to side) so that you place the umbrella in the right location BEFORE filling the base.

I love this umbrella. It is large enough to provide privacy and because it's water resistant, I can sit outside in the rain and listen to the raindrops on the umbrella. You could easily spend 10x the price for a similar umbrella. I am delighted.

Ablsolutely love this. Keeps the patio cool and it adjusts easily. It is a big umbrella but even with wind the umbrella stays strong and it is easy to store for the winter. Just drain the base (you fill it with water) and store.

The umbrella is great. It was delivered in two boxes; one box contained the base and the other held the umbrella parts. Instruction for set up were easy to follow, the umbrella operations are manageable for most adults. We are so happy to have the shade that this huge umbrella provides. I would caution the purchaser that you will need to have a firm level surface to place the umbrella. Also you will want to place the umbrella in a protected area for strong or gusty winds. Taking the umbrella off the stand is not something you will want to do very often. It does close down fairly tight so some wind won't bother it as long as it is closed.

Received this last week sooner than scheduled depending on which tracker I was looking at (the email vs my account). It came in 2 large boxes that I'm sure I could have gotten to back porch myself with some struggling but my tall, 16 yr old son was able to bring to porch without a problem with a little help holding doors. As mentioned in other reviews, the base needs sand or pea gravel and water to fill it but once its done it is sturdy and will hold the umbrella without a problem in light winds. I have not had it long enough to have tried it in heavier gusts and so I can't report on that. I was able to fill base at max with 3 x 50# bags of sand box sand. It took about 30 minutes using an empty plastic gallon milk jug with the bottom cut off as a funnel and a large plastic cup as a scoop. I put a heavyweight oversized type pool noodle/float under corner of base where fill hole is and then lifted side of base more to shake down sand to opposite side as needed and then used water via hose at the end to settle sand down and get rest of the sand in. With this method it actually wasn't too difficult at all. My 16 yr old built the base of it and put the umbrella on without any difficulty and it is very nice and has lots of tilt positions and rotates either way 360 degrees by stepping on foot pedal. We got the off white because the darker beige was out of stock and Its nice and neutral. I feel like this is a very sturdy, quality umbrella and should fill our need by our pool and west facing porch without any problems especially for the price compared to other similar products. I only with the base had wheels so we could move it around if needed, but I knew this one didn't going in so I can't count off for that.

We waited a few weeks to write this review to test in rain and sun. It's excellent in coverage and prevents rain penetration. The size of coverage is really HUGE and gives you much more shade than the usual offset umbrella. Because of its size, it's necessary to root it firmly, as you would any umbrella with an offset weight. We hope to live a long time with this umbrella! It was a replacement for a dark green Butterfly umbrella of 15 years that gave us total UV cover and rain resistance, but it gave up ultimately. The dark green gave much more deep shade than this off-white one, but I don't see that quality of umbrella being offered often today. This is a reasonable substitute.

This umbrella is amazing! It's easy to put together and works so well - easy to put up and down with the lever to adjust angle and the turn knob to open and close. The material is a high quality canvas and it's beautiful. I received the ivory, and it's been outside in the rain without a cover for a few months and still looks brand new. The only complaint is the base, which is plastic and needs to be filled with water or sand (I would prefer metal) - but it looks fine and works well to keep the umbrella weighted down.

    Questions & Answers

    • Q:

"How do you tilt the umbrella?"

      • A:

The nature of its design requires it to tilt. It has an arm on an upright pole that lifts effortlessly (believe me, I've hoisted many an offset umbrella, and this is the easiest) and as you reel it out it extends. It takes no extra strength or effort.

    • Q:

"What is the height at the edges, after sloping from the top?"

      • A:

45" from ground to corner when in full tilt

    • Q:

"What are the dimensions of the base?"

      • A:

33" x 33" and remember, filling with water is better than sand. Water you can drain easily, I now own two of them

    • Q:

"Instructions say to fill with (mostly) sand... and then add water. If I do that, how do I get the mixture out if I ever decide to empty the base? There is a drain hole, but I doubt the mixture will just flow out of the drain...."

      • A:

We just put water in ours & it works great! We meant to drain it before cold temperatures last fall, but I guess we just forgot it. Anyway the temp dropped to about 4 degrees & it didn’t freeze & crack .

      • A:

We just filled with water the sat 2 sand bags on the base, it's in a windy location so just needed extra stability

    • Q:

"How does it open and close? Is there a crank?"

      • A:

There is a handle with a release, not much different than a gasoline pump, that you squeeze and lift up the vertical rail. Pretty easy to do and not as heavy as I had imagined. The canopy opens with a crack on the side of the handle. You can adjust the height for the canopy angle and on the base there is a pedal that allows the canopy to be turned in the base.

      • A:

Did you mean crank? Not crack?
