For the price, you can't beat the quality and look. The box came well packaged, with plenty of styrofoam and cardboard between each piece. All the hardware pieces were in little individual bags. The pieces were labeled with stickers that peel off easy, and the surprise was that the instructions were clear! The only negative was that the glue was dried up, but fortunately I had wood glue at home. I put this together myself, it was not that difficult, but I would recommend two people. It took just over an hour. The shelf was sturdy; however, for safety, I would recommend mounting the top to the wall. It does come with some holders, but I didn't care for them. I used a small wood screw and drilled through the frame, mounting it into the wall. I used some wood puddy and had some matching black rubberwood paint, and you cannot tell a small wood screw was put through it.
In summary, I love this bookshelf, now that it is all set up! But it took a TON of extra work that I feel could have been avoided. Pros: - Very nice looking and stylish - Sturdy, just make sure to rescrew, and recheck everything before standing up! - I am using this bookshelf as kind of a headboard for my full size bed in my tiny apartment. It's nice because it has so much storage space for blankets and other large items! I am using the whole bottom to store things that I don't use very often, but I can still use about 2 and a half of the shelves regularly because the pedestal is so tall. - TONS of storage space which is really awesome for students! Cons: - At LEAST two people are required to put this together!! It took me and four of my roommates to put it together. - Instructions are ridiculous. They ask you to assemble the sides first and then take the assembled shelves and lift them 2 inches off the ground and line them up with the tiny holes and then screw them in, WHILE HOLDING IT UP. It was very VERY heavy, it took 3 people to lift it. and 1 to line everything up and 1 to screw everything in. My advice would be to screw on the side boards BEFORE putting on the side pillar things. Read all of the instructions and then decide how to put it together. It was a lot of effort for something that could have been easy. - Vertical shelves come in individual pieces. It took an hour just to assemble that part (by myself). The are wobbly until standing vertically and it was hard to keep everything straight to put into the tiny holes and assemble. -Basically extremely difficult to put it together. Other stuff to know: - This is the first time I have put together anything like this, moving into college yay! (I am inexperienced, so maybe it will be easier for others to set up?) -Requires a lot of space, just barely had enough room in my living room but did get it done! -The pillar things add about 4 inches ( 2 in front and 2 in back) to the 10 inch shelves, so you will have space behind the book shelf and in front. This was pretty critical to how tiny my apartment is so it was kind of a surprise! It looks great though and its nice for large textbooks or deep boxes.
I really like this new shelf. A few of the shelves are not exactly flat, but that is OK. Also the character on the wood for the very top is facing up and I think it should be facing down, since no one actually can see the top of this piece of furniture. I would buy it again. Looks great in my opinion and I'm a pretty picky individual.
On the pro side this bookshelf is good looking, stylish, and sturdy enough for what I want to use it for. On the down side, it did have a funny smell (which went away) right after unpacking; while I think it's strong enough to hold up indefinitely for decorative use, it does wobble a bit even when even when everything is tightened. I love the look of the shelf - it has a very stylish and modern look, but does not look out of place in my very old and traditional home. It works with a lot of decors and is useful for tying together other modern and traditional pieces of furniture. If you get really close and inspect the parts you do start to realize that the quality is not as good as it seems from afar, so in my opinion this piece is best used in areas that aren't necessarily the focal point of the room. That being said the quality is still pretty good and sturdy, so it will work in any room. Assembly took 15 minutes without any help. I use it to hold some plants and some small sculptures; the size and quality is just perfect for that. When I unpacked it there was a weird off-gass smell that I didn't like at all. The smell faded in an hour or so, but it makes me wonder what kinds of chemicals might have been used in treating the wood. I'm not very sensitive to those kinds of things, but if you are, it's something to consider. The individual pieces are all strong and look durable, but for some reason the fit and finish is such that there is still some wobble when you put it together. It's not enough that it detracts from the usefulness or beauty of the piece, but it is there. If you're using this for purely decorative use (which I imagine most buyers are) the quality is more than enough. If for some reason you envision this as a heavy-use kind of thing you might consider looking elsewhere. Overall I love it!
