Great shelving! Easy to put together however EXTREME caution is needed when handling the shelves. There are notches cut into each corner of each shelf that fit into the metal "legs". I broke each piece off simply by picking up the shelves and trying to put into place. As always, Overstock customer service was wonderful and sent replacements within the week.
This product arrived very quickly! It is a very large item and was well-packed with no damage to the product itself. However, the box looked pretty rough upon delivery. It was a very long, heavy box, and it took two of us to haul it from the garage entry door to inside. The bookshelf iron is very well constructed and our wood shelves were in very good condition. It is very easy to put together. We had only one shelf that took more time because one of its corresponding holes had not been drilled for an easy fit. We needed to use a rubber mallet on just that one hole, which was not bad for furniture that you must put together. This was a GREAT value! I had shopped in several local stores and online for three months to find a good fit and a good deal, and for me, this was it! I also got an even better deal for buying it over the Labor Day weekend! This item was HALF the price of one other online website that had it in their inventory, so that was when I jumped, and I do not regret it! For its very large size, height and width, that fits perfectly into a corner wall by my fireplace that runs to the very tall ceiling, I really got a great deal! You may not like the color of the wood shelves, which are real wood. There are real knot holes, which I like and add to its rustic appearance. I can't call the stain weathered because it is not a gray. It looks almost unfinished or bleached, but I like it fine because I have very dark wooden floors upon which it sits. I like the contrast. The very heavy iron is black with some rust-look spots along the edge. If you enlarge the picture of the bookshelf, you will be able to see what I am trying to describe. It's ok. It doesn't add or take away from the bookshelf, in my opinion. It is barely noticeable, but I am sure it was done to appear old and rustic in appearance. The bracing on the back was super easy to install and really stabilized it. However, the one thing that did not come with the bookshelf was a bracket or some other way to attach to the wall if that is a concern for you. My husband plans to devise his own bracket at the back of the x and in its middle to secure to the wall. Some of the bookshelves or etageres do come with a wall bracket, but I do not know how heavy duty they are or how effective. I would buy this product again, and I am a very frugal, cautious buyer, particular when it comes to online purchases. Overstock is a winner with this product and its price, in my opinion.
First of all, the packaging was a ***** to open. Took forever. I don't know what kind of glue they used, but it was awful. Overall, I love the style of the bookshelf & putting it together wasn't hard. However parts of it are flimsier than I expected. The shelves themselves are very heavy, sturdy wood, but the back of it is just cardboard. Also, rather than screwing in, a lot of it is held together just by wooden pegs, which means it comes apart easily. Because of that, you have to be really careful how you pick it up so it doesn't come apart.
On the pro side this bookshelf is good looking, stylish, and sturdy enough for what I want to use it for. On the down side, it did have a funny smell (which went away) right after unpacking; while I think it's strong enough to hold up indefinitely for decorative use, it does wobble a bit even when even when everything is tightened. I love the look of the shelf - it has a very stylish and modern look, but does not look out of place in my very old and traditional home. It works with a lot of decors and is useful for tying together other modern and traditional pieces of furniture. If you get really close and inspect the parts you do start to realize that the quality is not as good as it seems from afar, so in my opinion this piece is best used in areas that aren't necessarily the focal point of the room. That being said the quality is still pretty good and sturdy, so it will work in any room. Assembly took 15 minutes without any help. I use it to hold some plants and some small sculptures; the size and quality is just perfect for that. When I unpacked it there was a weird off-gass smell that I didn't like at all. The smell faded in an hour or so, but it makes me wonder what kinds of chemicals might have been used in treating the wood. I'm not very sensitive to those kinds of things, but if you are, it's something to consider. The individual pieces are all strong and look durable, but for some reason the fit and finish is such that there is still some wobble when you put it together. It's not enough that it detracts from the usefulness or beauty of the piece, but it is there. If you're using this for purely decorative use (which I imagine most buyers are) the quality is more than enough. If for some reason you envision this as a heavy-use kind of thing you might consider looking elsewhere. Overall I love it!
