This book case is perfect for the small space I needed it for. Sturdy enough for the price I paid for it. My only gripe about it is not even related to the quality of the bookcase. When the packaging was opened, we found a big gash in the top shelf of the bookcase. It must have been from not being packaged solidly enough and from rough handling in transit. Because it was too much trouble to ship it back and get another one, we taped it up and are using it.
I've use the natural colored version of these before and liked them. This time we decided to use them in a new home office mainly due to the fact that they're sturdy but lightweight and easy to get up our stairs. At the moment they're both stacked, full of hard-bound books, and don't show even a bit of sagging after three weeks. One thing I would suggest it connecting the backs together with a two-inch, screw in metal strap of the kind you can buy at a hardware or home center. While not required it gives me a little more assurance that our cats can't climb on them and pull the top unit down. I also wish they offered a matching top shelf-- or 'cap'-- for these as it would be a nice place to put a few knick knacks. In short, they're well worth the money if you need functionality and reasonably good looks as opposed to a furniture quality bookcase.
The item assembled fairly fast, but no predrilled holes to affix metal cross accent so you have to measure and mark yourself. You can see where the manufacturer filled some defects with wood putty because the stain picks up differently, but luckily it's on areas not too conspicuous. For the price I don't feel the quality is up to par. All in all, love the collection. Purchased the island desk, console and hutch, 60" shelf, 30" shelf, and ladder bookcase. The collection looks nice. Stain smell is still lingering quite strong after 7 days. All pieces MDF and minor obvious manufacturer defects filled in with wood putty. But unless you're scrutinizing, like I was for shipping damage, they aren't that noticeable. Again, overpriced for the quality, especially MSRP.
I bought these for an in-home "library" - good price, I thought, for getting several bookcases that looked somewhat classy. They were a pain to put together, but any assembly-required furniture probably would be in multiples... I was disappointed with the design, though, once I realized after getting them together that the pieces that frame the front sides of the bookcase cover an inch or more of the shelves - which means it'll cover up a book's spine and make it difficult to remove if you've got a full shelf. Does hold up well, though, with shelves full of books.
