Story Behind the art:
"I have many skills, among them being creative. Whenever I come across an object, such as a stone, a trunk, leaves, or old wood, I come up with ideas to transform it into something decorative. It is something that springs up in me, the need to capture what I see in nature or what I imagine, whether in painting, handicrafts and other crafts as well.
"Hello everyone, I am so excited to be able to introduce myself as part of this Novica family of artisans. My name is Alba Monge, proud Costa Rican; I was born in 1948. I was born and grew up surrounded by trees and mountains, in a place called Acosta. I lived with my parents and I was the oldest of 12 other siblings. None of them is an artist, but they have many manual skills. I had always liked art, but I didn't have the time to dedicate myself to that. But 16 years ago, I started taking craft, drawing and painting courses, which have become a very important part of my life.
"Art has filled me with many wonderful experiences, like once being in an art and craft exhibition; my daughters served customers in the small stall. I stayed a bit away because I felt that my works might not be good enough for the foreign public that came. I was very surprised when I saw some foreigners buying my works, and they insisted to my daughters that they wanted to meet the artist. After having a certain fear that my work would not be liked by others, this act of these people encouraged me to move forward.
"On another occasion, I took some paintings to a very exclusive gallery, with the fear that they would not accept them. The manager of the place told me that she did not like the crafts of the country, that it did not attract her attention, but that she saw something special in what I was showing him. She told me to wait for her because she had other people to attend to. After a while, she called me to the exhibition room, and to my surprise, she had arranged everything I had in the main exhibition room. I couldn't believe it! All these experiences have been enriching for my life.
"My daughter, Guisselle Mora, an excellent artisan from Novica, has motivated me a lot to continue. We combine strengths and motivate each other. This is an experience that fills me with great enthusiasm because I can continue to capture my inspiration in the volcanoes of my country, the animals of the tropical forest, the mountains and beaches. I hope that the clients enjoy my art, but that they are also motivated to test their creative abilities, because I started this at 57 years old, and today I can't stop because I feel great pleasure and love doing it. For me it has been more than entertainment; it is a part of my life, and to my surprise, it has generated resources for me."
