    • Gorgeous shade
      Verified Purchase

This canopy is stunning in appearance and construction. It is clean and architectural in feeling. The picture does not do it justice. To boot, the beige is exactly the same shade as our stucco house. The only regret is that Overstock doesn't seem to have the larger, 17' x 17' size! carmen

    • CAUTION! Do NOT use the nylon rope included!!
      Verified Purchase

I've owned this sail for aprox 2 seasons. When I installed it originally I had to purchase turnbuckles and better quality rope clamps as the ones that come with this are poorly made and excuse the pun "Chinese" The mistake I made was using the nylon rope that was included to hang it. Just yesterday I learned a painful lesson! I was tensioning the canopy as it had begun to sag and "snap" the nylon rope broke in the middle and the turnbuckle hit me in the forehead with some serious force and gashed my head open. There was not even that much tension applied to the rope, I'm going to guess maybe 10-20lbs of force. The hardware I purchased at my local hardware store is capable of 275lb of force. I figured I would never even get close to this with the canopy so I should never have to worry about the hardware. Little did I know the nylon rope is made so cheaply, it doesn't even feel like nylon, more like plastic. I can hold several strands in my hand and just a little force breaks them. Just be aware of this when installing. I ended up purchasing 3/16 stainless steel cable with the proper end ties to make loops. I'm just glad I wasn't on the ladder when it broke or I might not be here to write this review today. Just remember when installing this there is quit a bit of tension holding this thing make sure you know what you are doing when you hang it and wear safety glasses. I didn't have any on when it broke and I was very fortunate that it didn't hit me in the eye, it could of been a much more serious injury.

    • Shade FINALLY!
      Verified Purchase

We have open space around our house and I put this off the kitchen door so we can finally use the patio! Plus it helps to keep the kitchen cooler. My husband wants one now to put outside the garage so he can work out there in comfort. I use to sew this type of fabric and the quality is excellent. I see using this for many years.

    • Square Sail Sun Shade not too Shabby
      Verified Purchase

I purchased a Square Sail and was very impressed with the sturdiness of construction and the attachment points. I was leery of the attachment points and if there was reinforcement along the whole length of the material. I was favorably impressed with both. A triangular attachment eye of what appears to be 304 stainless steel, approximately 5/16" diameter on each corner. These eyes are welded shut and attached to the fabric with a robust nylon mesh strap that is sewn along the entire edge of the sail. The sail came with all the hardware to install it, turnbuckles, nylon rope, concrete anchors and eye bolts. The material is somewhat translucent, I purchased yellow, giving a very cheerful, natural looking hue underneath. As expected, it is very shady underneath. The material is NOT waterproof, although it appears to resist water. I am going to test a section with marine canvas waterproofing spray to see if I can make it more resistant to water. The sail is not square when you lay it flat on the ground. It is narrower in the center than the ends. This is something I did not expect in my design but it looks very nice. I was so pleased with it that I ordered a second one.

    • Be Prepared
      Verified Purchase

We love the look and purpose of our new sunshade. Unfortunately, it was not the easiest thing to put up. The hardware included didn't even work with the shade so we had to purchase all new hardware. Luckily, my husband is pretty handy and we have great neighbors. We attached it to our house and steel beams we added to our deck. We've had it for a couple of weeks and it seems to hold up well to wind and rain, as we just had a storm pass through. The shade itself seems to be very durable with sturdy seams and D ring attachment. I do like the shade but you may need help figuring how to best put it up as well as help getting it up. Make sure there is a center peak by putting two opposite corners high and the other two low so the rain will roll off and not make a pond in the center. Be prepared to buy hardware that works with the item. Make sure where you're attaching the shade is at least a few feet larger than the size of the shade so you can tighten up the slack easily. (notice the picture has the shade between trees that are very distant from each other) That's my experience. Enjoy.

    Questions & Answers

    • Q:

"What about snow? Must we take it down in winter because of weight of snow. Intallation will be in new Mexico desert region... very hot in summer, some snow in winter."

      • A:

Yes you will have to take down because the weight of the snow sitting on top of it will pull whatever you have them mounted to in the corners right out it's too much weight based upon some screws in a pole or a wall. But they are extremely easy to take down and put up their simple hooks . The hardware that comes with them is very good and expensive this thing is a complete value I bought them for a house I was flipping and they are a huge hit.

      • A:

Sorry I didn't see your location I was thinking Minnesota snow you probably won't have to take them down if it's only snowing like an inch depending upon what they're mounted to and how they're mounted

    • Q:

"Do you have to put it away every time it rains? Will it damage the material?"

      • A:

I wish I had an answer for you but we live in California and we haven't seen rain for a very long time! I wasn't planning on taking it down when it rains as the material itself seems waterproof but it won't keep anything beneath it from getting wet as it's very loosely weaved together.

    • Q:

"We are just about ready to purchase this product, but have two questions. (1) Who is the manufacturer of this product, and (2) is there a warranty on the product? Thanks so much for any information you can provide."

      • A:

I don't have any details as my neighbor installed it for me. It sat in a box for a year before I got it up. I love it because I have it as a shade over my driveway. It will come down in the winter. It is not water proof so things under get wet.

    • Q:

"Is this something that is easy to put up and take down. I'm thinking I only want it up when we have people over and not all the time. Once the poles are in place is this an option or should I just consider keeping it up all the time?"

      • A:

You tie it to a pole or structure and that will take some effort if you aren't using pulleys.

    • Q:

"do you make custom sizes I need one 8 foot by 5 foot"

      • A:

Hello Tony, I'm sorry we do not have that size available. Here is the smallest size I could find ITEM# 12585256. Have a great day!

      • A:

Hello mrblue, the overall approximate measurements of the shade is taken from each each side. Each side is approximately 11 feet 10 inches. Thank you for shopping with us!

    • Q:

"I am curious about the creme color...on the pic of it over the pool it appears a true creme almost white color, but on the small color way photo it looks more yellow. Can someone please tell me which color it is more like? Thank you!"

      • A:

Hello Amy, it is a cream color; there is no yellow in it.

      • A:

I'm sorry, I ordered the cream as well, thinking it would look more like the pic. It does not, it appears more yellow, almost peachy to me. I may go for the beige now...

Hello renonvusa, the Medium Square Sail Extra-heavy Fabric Sun Shade holds up in wind pretty well. From what other reviewers state it holds up in wood great and still looks brand new, one reviewer even said they had 60 MPH winds and it stayed in place. I hope this information helps. Thanks for shopping with us!

"What is the GSM of the polyethylene"

      • A:

The weight of just the sail is 5-8 lbs per the answers to a previous question. The sail is 11' 10" square. Based on that an online calculator has GSM between 174 and 278, a big range. This is also the GSM for a low density polyethylene material as stated in the product description. The product description states "extra heavy" material; note that a HIGH density polyethylene (HDPE) material at 320 GSM is extra heavy and also heavier duty than a 180 GSM low density polyethylene (LDPE). HDPE is what pond liner is usually made of.

    • Q:

"Could this product be made more rain proof by applying water repellant?"

      • A:

Perhaps but haven't looked into it.
