I bought this to go next to the TV stand to hold components. It looks great in our lodge style family room. Very easy to put together. The box arrived smashed and had some open spots but none of the pieces were damaged. However some of the screws were missing and I had to find similar screws to complete assembling it. Even with the screw substitution, I was able to put it together, without my husbands help, in less than 30 minutes. Love the unique industrial look. the wood shelves resemble handsewn lumbar, dark oak or walnut..The metal is a black cast iron looking metal. It is slightly wobbly but comes with wall securing hardware if you have small children or live on a fault line.. I don't think its going anywhere, so I haven't secured it. All in all very happy with my purchase.
I searched for something the perfect size and, after assembly, the actual height is 34 1/4 inches, which is 1/4" too tall for the space I wanted to put it. The description says 33.5 inches and the additional 3/4" ruined it for me.
After reading the reviews here, I was really curious. Is it solid wood? Yes, I think so. A thin, very hard wood. A few pieces of it may be some sort of composite. They have no wood grain. What about the height? It is 34 inches tall. As to putting it together, I watched my husband do it while we were watching TV. He put the outside framework together, then turned the thing upside down and put the shelves on starting with the middle V-shaped shelf, then the bottom shelf. Then he turned it over and put the top shelf on. He did not use the glue (just asking for trouble, he said). The allen wrench and some parts that came with it were not needed. All in all, I like the look, though I too will paint it, probably navy blue. The scrapes don't make it look antique, they make it look unfinished. Best blacken them or paint the whole piece.
I absolutely love these shelves! I have had them for about three weeks now and I couldn't be happier. There was only one problem, (below) which being a single gal who knows her way around a hardware store, wasn't really that big of a deal. First, the delivery man brought them all the way up to my 3rd floor walk up apartment! Not sure if that is an Overstock thing, or delivery man thing but I'm gald he/she did it beucase they were super heavy. Happy about that! Next, I put them together all by myself. No need for help if you know what you're doing. The problem with these shelves is that the dowels included that you use to attach the shelf to the base are a fraction of an inch too small, leaving the shelves very wobbly. I went to Ace Hardware and bought new 1/4" dowels for about $3 for 30 and replaced them and now it's all fixed. No wobbles at all. If the dowels in your package slip in and out of the holes too easily they are too small. Run to the hardware store quick and get new ones before you continue. Normally, dowels should be hard to put in and you should need to almost use a hammer to get them in for a snug fit when building shelves. This is the only reason why I gave them a 4 out of 5. They seem to be very study as well - I've got lamps and glass vases on the top shelf and a 20 pound candle in the middle of one of them too. I'm not worried at all about anything falling. :-) Couldn't be happier! They are a great find!
