    • Good and Bad - A Thorough Review
      Verified Purchase

We bought this product for our living room to fill a wider space and to get something heavier that our kids wouldn't be able to push around. In terms of those two things, the Lawrence does the job. Let's go over the good: -It's real wood (for the most part--the drawer is MDF). So it's solid and heavy. Caveat here is that the wood is slightly soft--it can be indented with a hard press of your fingernail. I'm worried about what legos being smashed against it is going to do... -It's a great looking piece. Manages to feel slightly MCM but sophisticated/contemporary as well. -Arrived well packaged and with all the pieces. Instructions were actually pretty good in my opinion (although there's a negative here I'll explain below). -For the quality of the piece, I'd say it's well worth the money, as comparable pieces of furniture (say from West Elm or Crate and Barrel) will run you 2-3 times more. Now for the bad: -The color on the website here is very misleading. It's actually much darker than the warm walnut you see. It's very much a dark walnut. Because of this, the piece much less MCM than it appears, and feels much more contemporary. It was very disappointing because we wanted that lighter brown, but it's too much of a hassle to send back so we kept it (and it kind of matches our dining table). -Although the instructions were fine, THEY MISLABELED TWO OF THE PIECES! I was looking at it as I was assembling and noticed something wasn't sitting flush so I pondered for a long time what in the world was wrong. I checked my work multiple times and was following all instructions to a T. What I found out in the end was that they had mislabeled E and F (which are basically identical boards), so that if I assembled it according to the instructions, the back panel wouldn't have sat in the recessed area made for it. This was super frustrating as I had to not only figure out what the hell was wrong, question my sanity and intelligence, but I ended up having to go back and do more work... -Part of that "more work" was replacing BROKEN CAM LOCKS. I don't know who in the world made these parts, but they break so easily. Be VERY careful when turning these to tighten, as off axis cam lock screws and too much tension will snap these apart. They are so cheap. In the end I broke about 6 of them, so I had to drive to my local hardware store to buy replacements. It added time and cost me more money. Maybe I got a bad batch, but these pieces seemed awfully cheap (cheaper than even the Ikea cam locks). -The hole in the back is kind of funky. It's placed low so that you have to run any wires through the hole and UP a half circle cut out of the shelf to connect anything. I don't understand why they didn't just put the whole in the top portion or provide two holes or something. Not ideal. So in conclusion--MY specific experience was very spoiled by the fact that two pieces are mislabled and parts kept breaking, but in the end the product is very sound and looks very nice. I'm probably closer to a 3.75 but we'll just round up to a 4.

Vey heavy piece. Seems like a quality piece. But the color is very dark. I was looking for a walnut finish - more like a warm brown. It's much darker than pictured.

    • Beautiful, but don't follow the instructions.

Gorgeous piece, feels more expensive than it really was once assembled. It took me over three hours to assemble though as I wanted to follow the instructions to a T and they weren't the greatest. Use your common sense and logic and don't do what I did. You'll save yourself time. It also helps if there's another person around for assembly. My package did come damaged (two corners of the entertainment center were damaged) and dealing with customer service was a bit of headache, but I'll be able to fix it up and it'll be as good as new. The wood is quite soft, so be careful when you insert the drawer and so on. It also looks darker in person, but still really beautiful. Overall, it's a beautiful piece of furniture!

    • Nightmare to Assemble
      Verified Purchase

The furniture arrives on time and it was well packaged. The biggest problem was that some parts were mislabeled and the holes for the drawer rail were drilled on the opposite side of the board. I was able to easily work around the mislabeled boards however making corrections for the misdrilled holes was more challenging. I was faced with a decision to make... disassemble what I've already put together, repackage the furniture, and deal with the furniture company to try and return the product, or to correct the hole drilling myself. I chose to drill my own holes and was able to complete the installation. What angers me is that I believe this furniture ended up on Overstock because the manufacturer's knew there were defects. If this were the case there should have been full disclosure in the description of the product and the price should have been further reduced. Because of this experience, this will be the last product I buy from Overstock and last product I buy from this furniture manufacturer.

    • Good but a few caveats
      Verified Purchase

I really like the ent. center as it is made of real wood and looks very high end, but there are a couple of things you should know before buying. One, there is only one hole in the back of the unit( in the center section) for wires. Our components didn't fit in that small space, and weren't good to put in the center drawer either, so we ended up putting them in the lefthand side, taking the shelf out. We then had to drill a new hole in the back of the unit on the lefthand side for the wires. It didn't take long, nor was it hard, but just know that the left and right sides do not have wire holes out the back or connecting to the center portion. Second, I agree with another reviewer about the unit scratching easy. My husband was excited to put together the first piece of furniture for our new home, and therefore started without me. Had I been there, I probably would of waited and called to get a replacement piece, as the scratches were on the top panel of the unit - very unfortunate. I am going to try a wood crayon and polish and hope for the best. Finally, note this is VERY heavy - it is wood! So 2 people are necessary to build for sure, at one point we used a couple of extra hands on top of both of ours to turn it over (you build it upside down.) All that being said, I'd stil buy it again b/c I am in love with the design.

    • Perfect addition!
      Verified Purchase

My husband and I moved into our new house in April 2010 and have been looking like crazy for the perfect entertainment center (or credenza, as he likes to call it). Most were WAY too expensive or just too ***** for our taste, but he happened to find this one on Overstock and he liked it right away. It took me a little while, but when it went on sale after Thanksgiving we ordered it. It was extremely time consuming to construct, but in the end it is a very good looking piece. Solid construction and a deep, chocolate color. We were expecting to have to replace the door pulls because they look a little cheesy in the photo, but in reality they are modern and understated. We won't be replacing them after all. This piece is a nice finishing touch to our living room. Not too big, with a modern look and great price!

    • Wonderful MCM style at a very reasonable price
      Verified Purchase

I was looking for an entertainment center that would fit in with the midcentury modern look that I've been going for in my living room, but most of the ones I found online and really liked were $1,000 or more (and that's before shipping costs). Maybe one day I'll be able to buy an original, teak, midcentury modern credenza / tv stand... but for now, this Lawrence Entertainment Center fits the bill perfectly. It's nice and wide, so my 47" hdtv sits on it and there's plenty of room to spare on either side. The relatively dark wood finish matches my leather couches to a tee, and the legs make it easy to clean the floor underneath it. Be aware, however, that it's designed to hold the minimal amount of audio/video components. I've only got a cable box and a blu ray player in the space above the center drawer, and that's it. If you're going to want a piece of furniture to hold speakers, video game components, etc., you might not like this one. It's really minimalist. Also, I'd strongly suggest having a helper and a cordless power drill on hand to put this puppy together, otherwise it'll take forever to assemble. I built mine alone, with my trusty Milwaukee drill, and it took me between 5-6 hours. But all of the parts were included and were clearly labeled. The end result was worth it: a slick, expensive-looking, heavy piece of furniture that's way better looking than most of the tv stands you find at local furniture stores. (It's made in Malaysia, for those of you who are interested in that sort of information.)

    • Easy to construct
      Verified Purchase

I found this entertainment center very easy to construct. All the parts are lettered or numbered. Previous reviews have commented on leveling the cabinet doors. However, the door hinges are self adjusting. There are two screws you turn to adjust each door, so the doors are easy to get flush and level. Just follow the directions and you will be fine.

    Questions & Answers

    • Q:

      "How much assembly is required?"

      • A:

This piece comes flat packed so there is quite a bit of assembly required. Took a couple hours. It's a beautiful piece though and worth the time and effort. Pretty heavy too.

    • Q:

"what is the height measurement please inside the doors with the shelf, meaning bottom to shelf and shelf to top? Also what is the shelf made of and is it vented?"

      • A:

Compartments with doors: 23 inches wide x 19.2 inches diameter x 14.3 inches high (without shelf) Center drawer interior: 20.6 inches wide x 15.7 inches diameter x 4.5 inches high Upper center compartment: 23 inches wide x 20 inches diameter x 6.3 inches high The product is made from rubberwood.

    • Q:

"What is the height of the legs?"

      • A:

        Leg are 8.75 tall.

    • Q:

"Does this item have a predrilled hole in the back to accommodate cable boxes and cables?"

      • A:

The manual does show a hole in the back panel.

    • Q:

"Does the bottom drawer pull out all the way?"

      • A:

        Yes it does.

    • Q:

"Could this be used with out adding the legs during assembly? I need a piece that is 20 inches of less. "

      • A:

Even if the legs were not added it would not be 20" less.

      • A:

I don't see why not. Its solid wood on the bottom, so shouldn't be an issue with omitting the legs, with some kind of protection between the piece and the floor. Hope that helps.

      • A:

The legs are assembled onto the cabinet, so if you don't want them, just omit that step. I'm not certain that it would be less than 20", even without the legs though.

You have to assemble the legs onto the unit, so if you don't want them, you can leave them off.

      • A:

I supposed they could. You have about a one inch base that would be directly on the floor.

    • Q:

"Do you anticipate this coming back in stock sometime? I already signed up for one re-stock notice and that expired, so I signed up again. Just wondering if I should keep waiting or not."

      • A:

I will post more information when it is available.

    • Q:

"What are the overall dimensions of this? Width and height?"

      • A:

Overall, this item measures approximately 72 inches wide x 20 inches deep x 25 inches high.

    • Q:

"measurement of width of the entire entertainment center"

      • A:

The overall width of this entertainment center is approximately 72 inches.

    • Q:

"Hello. This stand does not seem to have any glass doors, only woode ones. Does that allow for the remote to work? That is, If the set top box or Xbox is behind the doors, can the remote function? Or do you have to open the door for the remote to work everytime? Thanks."

      • A:

You wouldn't want to leave the door closed because your Xbox would overheat. We just leave it open when playing our PlayStation. Accidentally left it closed while using it for Netflix and the console started running hard and almost overheated.

    • Q:

"is this veneer or solid wood?"

      • A:

Everything is solid wood, except for the backing, which I think is plywood.

      • A:

It is solid wood, I use wood polish and wood cleaner on it to keep it shiney and dust free. I live in a high-rise with all windows and this piece is gorgeous. I've had it for about 10 months now and people still complement me on it. It looks a LOT more expensive than it is. It is not the easiest to assemble but I'm a 5'8 120b girl and I did all by myself in about 4 hours.
