      I. Initial Product Research and Expectations for Buying This Model: My initial reason for buying this Artisan was to have an electric spiralizer that could spiralize ‘angel hair’ (very thin) zoodles and other vegetables and at the same time have a stand mixer that also does a variety of other things. Several months ago, I bought one smaller electric spiralizer, it didn’t work, and I returned it to the store the next day. I have been spiralizing with smaller and lighter non-electric, BPA-free plastic units that I can travel with, and I have been having an excellent experience with one particular brand. Since I don’t have a stand mixer and have always wanted a KitchenAid because it is the Cadillac of stand mixers, I did an web search and found this Artisan unit as both ‘brand new’ and as a ‘refurb’, sold by several online resellers. KitchenAid is a ‘Made in America’ company formerly based in Greenville, Ohio. (http://www.kitchenaid.com/ & https://www.kitchenaid.com/assets/pdfs/other/KitchenAid_broch-2011indd.pdf ) Its website has great information and videos of products, how to use them, and how to problem-solve. There is also a section of recipes. The two online KitchenAid online refurb resellers that I found differ in terms of the quality of the items that they sell to buyers. Note that it is a bit frightening to buy any major-purchase appliance, even one with a standard warranty, let alone venture into the world of ‘refurbs’ without personally seeing and examining one before deciding to purchase it. Refurbs also have short, limited warranties. Luckily, there is a huge community of online buyers who rate their experiences to help prospective buyers know what to expect when we buy a product from a company. I thank everyone who takes the time to do this because it helped me ultimately decide which company would win my business. My review here is to help future buyers in our online KitchenAid stand mixer community. The 2 companies that I found that offered good deals for refurbs were: Amazon and Overstock. Amazon buyer reviews repeatedly mentioned that their units had dents, dings, and signs of previous use. Overstock, on the other hand, was the company that I bought from because it has very few buyers mention receiving anything but a brand-new-looking unit when it is delivered. Overstock also gave me a discount coupon and free shipping to lower the price even more. Buying a KitchenAid stand mixer is a sizeable investment, so doing multiple online searches for reviews and videos as well as talking to family and friends about their experiences using them is an important part of deciding to purchase one. Also, luckily, older KitchenAid stand mixers have the same Attachment Hub, allowing all owners to purchase the newer accessories that current first-time owners like me can also buy. In short, whenever anyone decides to buy a KitchenAid stand mixer, he/ she can still have the same operational experiences as the rest of the already-established KitchenAid buyer community. It is important to note that most brands of stand mixers phase out their older models by putting newer bells and whistles on their units, so that buyers need to continually update and buy the newer models again and again. By doing this, companies can sell ever more products. KitchenAid products are much more stable in terms of new model rollouts and are often passed down from generation to generation, which told me that I was buying a well-made product that would last me for decades. (Note that this brand is also sold abroad. My mother-in-law bought her KitchenAid stand mixer in Kuwait in the late 1980s/ early 1990s, with all of the attachments available at that time. Every KitchenAid piece is still in great condition, and it is all still in use today. Because my husband saw his mom constantly using her KitchenAid stand mixer, he was thrilled that I wanted to buy one, too; he was already familiar with it and what it could do!) II. Post-Delivery Initial Product Discovery: The outside mailing carton was huge because I bought not only the Artisan but also one of the spiralizer attachments. Each product box was sturdy and both were placed inside of this huge box with bubble packets covering both internal boxes. The Artisan refurb was placed in a sturdy, well-packed white box marked ‘Refurbished KitchenAid Warranty’ that had form-fitting Styrofoam sections firmly packed on the outside of the Artisan, encasing the entire unit. Also included besides the 3 attachments was a spiral-bound book: Instructions and Recipes for Your KitchenAid Stand Mixer. At the beginning of the book, there are some stickers stating that this is a ‘Refurbished’ unit with a ‘6-month Limited Warranty’. Another folded paper was a mail-in warranty, which looked like another company that profiles and markets data about buyers, so that they can send them ads to sell them other products. I didn’t fill in that paper and send it because it asked questions that have nothing to do with this stand mixer. Instead, I registered my Artisan refurb directly on the KitchenAid site, under the Warranty section. After my Artisan was delivered, while I was thoroughly looking it over, I noticed that the location St. Joseph, MI (‘Made in the USA’), its main design center and current HQ, was printed on the top metal band above the mixer Speed Control Knob’. (http://www.corporateoffice.com/KitchenAid.html & http://www.fundinguniverse.com/company-histories/kitchenaid-history/ ) Note that the design center is concerned with market research and quality. This is important for quality issues that need to be resolved. At this point, I took multiple digital photos of the unit from all sides, even getting under the mixer base, which has a refurb sticker and model and serial numbers printed on it. (To look under the base, I had to lay the unit on its side.) If I have to have anything fixed or adjusted, I have the digital photos of what my unit looks like from top to bottom, right out of the box (which I’ve also printed out to look at) plus a printed-out copy of my KitchenAid registration on the KitchenAid website. If I need to talk about something over the phone with someone, I can email them the photos and the registration page with the model and serial numbers of my Artisan, and they can see what I’m talking about. How did my unit look when it came out of the box? It was pristine! There was no dent, ding, bang, paint smudge, oil leak, or anything that even looked like another person had first bought it and had to return it. The only thing that I found that was slightly amiss with the unit was slight, black scuff marks on the white cord. This is not a problem for me at all. The 3 enclosed attachments with this Artisan are: the Coated Paddle/ Beater, the Coated Dough Hook, and the metal Wire Whip. Note that web searches discussed the advantages of having the coated paddle and dough hook because the metal versions all shed bits of their metal into food batter, and the coating also allows for the items to be used in a dishwasher. Luckily, there have been no problems with the wire whip. At this point, I washed all 3 attachments plus the metal bowl in warm, soapy water, and dried them. Note that the Overstock Artisan refurb sale photo shows the unit with a pouring shield placed on the bowl, but the unit wasn’t sold with this shield. This wasn’t a problem for many of us because the ad carefully noted in bold print that the shield wasn’t included. However, to correct this, the photo should be reshot without the shield to better show exactly what the buyer is purchasing. III. The Metal Bowl: The stainless steel metal bowl, manufactured in India (labelled as such at the bottom of the bowl), looked shiny and well-made, with no dings, bangs, or scrapes. When I rubbed a white Kleenex around the inside of the bowl, however, the tissue turned a gun-metal gray color. I ran a search and found information to deal with this on some fairly well-hidden pages on the KitchenAid site: (http://producthelp.kitchenaid.com/Troubleshooting?startid=4618 & http://www.kitchenaid.com/customer-service/ ). The bowls were outsourced to be manufactured in India, then imported to the US, and KitchenAid polished the bowls here. There have been online discussions about the bowls oxidizing and shedding metallic bits into the batter/ food. ‘Stainless steel’ doesn’t leech its metal out like this, so there is an outsource problem with the materials that India uses to make these bowls. Because of this problem, KitchenAid should manufacture its own bowls in the US to match US 6-Sigma Quality Control standards and to provide jobs to Americans. In the end, it would be cheaper, safer for customer health when eating foods made with the bowls made in the USA, and better to hire people here to manufacture them because we have quality standards checklists, and customers would be happier with all of their purchase parts - safe and ready to use - without any quality issues. This would also end the constant online KitchenAid stand mixer discussions about ‘stainless steel’ bowl problems, outsourced/ made in India. I ended up cleaning my bowl 3 times (in 3 different ways) after reading information for doing so listed on the KitchenAid ‘Trouble-Shooting’ link, above: 1. lemon juice and salt, 2. a baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) paste, and 3. a product called Barkeeper’s Friend (which I don’t have and didn’t use). I still had metal bits coming off of the bowl after doing 1. and 2., so I needed to find another way to solve this problem. At this point, I invented a 4th (my 3rd) cleaning method: Wash the bowl in warm, soapy water and rinse. Then, add some sodium bicarbonate and apple cider vinegar (weaker than distilled) together in the wet bowl. The mixture bubbles, so do this in a well-ventilated room. After 10-15 seconds, swish the solution around the sides of the bowl for a few seconds, and wash. In sum, I love my Artisan refurb from Overstock!

I have wanted a KitchenAid stand mixer for many, many years, but held off on buying one due to high price relative to the little use I thought would have for the machine as well as confusion on the product that would be best for me (Artisan vs Classic). Well, a few weeks ago I was on Overstock and saw that they were listing a refurbished Artisan for about $130 less than a brand new mixer. I did my homework (online and in retail stores) to check prices and models and zeroed in on the Artisan as being the right model for me. Having recently completed project work for a major small appliance company, I understood the quality checks that a product must go through before being resold as “refurbished” (it still carries a brand name after all and a company doesn’t sell refurbished products unless they work!!) so I had no hesitation in buying a KitchenAid stand Mixer {KitchenAid RRK150WH White 5-quart Artisan Stand Mixer (Refurbished)} from Overstock. The mixer comes with 1 stainless steel 5qt bowl and 3 attachments (kneading hook, whip attachment and paddle). Because so many baking recipes call for mixing wet and dry ingredients separately, I bought a 2nd stainless bowl so I don’t have to transfer ingredients into another bowl. I also elected to buy the plastic splatter shield which is a great help in the kitchen when mixing at high speeds! I rate this 5 stars. I wholeheartedly recommend this appliance and I am just sorry it took me so many years to purchase one… But I feel like I am the smartest person on the block because nobody knows that I got it for a steal! SOLID construction and timeless great looks. The mixer does not disappoint! Anyone who cooks or bakes knows that this should be a standard piece of equipment required in a well equipped kitchen. Great looking, easy to use and indeed it is an aid in the kitchen!

    • Product came badly cracked and bent. Does not work
      Verified Purchase

My refurbished KitchenAid mixer came badly damaged. The part that holds the bowl is slightly bent up and the metal is cracked to show it. Because the base of the unit is bent, the bowl is not properly aligned with the head: it is tilted and too high. Additionally, because the bracket which holds the bowl is also bent, it is very hard to insert/remove the bowl. I will contact OverStock in the morning to see if they will replace my unit.

    • Q:

"Does this refurbished mixer come with all three mixer attachments (dough hook, flat beater, wire whisk)?"

      • A:

Hi! This is one of the BEST deals that I have ever bought! Yes, it comes with the coated dough hook, the coated paddle/ flat beater, and the wire whisk. There is not a scratch, dent, or other mark on it to show that anyone had ever purchased it to make it a refurb. (There is a little bit of black scuffing on the cord, but that is really not anything of any importance.) I compared the O'stock refurbs to the Amazon refurbs and the O'stock items are almost all flawless. I will write up a detailed review when I have time, so that you can read about my discoveries with this wonderful refurbed KA Artisan stand mixer. ENJOY this great kitchen item! I love mine and am glad that I bought it from O'stock (with a coupon)! Regards. Suzanne
