We purchased 2 of these beds for our 4.5 year old twins, who share a room. We chose them because we liked the play space and built-in storage and it's not as tall as regular bunk beds, which our kids are not ready for. Some thoughts: Purchase/Delivery: Purchase was easy and delivery was way faster than I thought! We got them with a few days, which was a pleasant surprise. The boxes are HEAVY!!! Be prepared to have some help lifting them. Putting it Together: It took my husband who is fairly good at this sort of stuff 1.5 days to put 2 together. He said the instructions were pretty straightforward and made sense for the most part. He only needed my help is lifting the bed on top of the shelving. As others have mentioned, we did have some damaged pieces, namey corners where clearly the box had been dropped (did I mention - they are HEAVY). Better packaging and protection of the corners might help prevent that. In our case it was more cosmetic than structural, so we were able to use it and not wait for a replacement piece. So all in all, I'd say budget 1/2 to 3/4 of a day to build one. Once assembled, my husband and I both felt that they are strong and well built. My kids weigh 40 lbs and the weight limit is 250 lbs. so I think they will age-out of these before they out-grow the weight limit. Usage: The kids use the ladder fine. The bed has great high walls. we did purchase a 6" memory foam mattress, rather than a standard twin mattress. 1) less temptation to jump, which we don't want, and 2) a standard 12" mattress is too thick for my comfort for my younger kids. If mine were older, I'd be less worried about them rolling out and would get a standard thicker mattress, but the thinner trundle/bunk bed mattress style is great for us now. The play space underneath is perfect! I bought a pressure curtain rod and made curtains from fabric. It came out super cute. The opening is 38" wide and 41" long, so 1.5 yards of fabric was perfect. Overall, I think these beds are perfect for what we need. The smaller foot print allows us to have 2 in one 12x12 room fairly comfortably. The playspace makes great use of the space and allows us to move toys out of the living room into their bedroom so yay!
This is a carefully made item, no parts were missing, and the instructions were easy to follow. I have a 12” mattress on it which is fine. There is no gap like some other reviewers have had. I put this together myself which was tricky but doable. It was really hard to try to hold two very long, heavy pieces with the holes lined up just so, and then try to maintain that while screwing in a bolt. It would have been much easier to do with an extra set of hands. There are 72 wood screws to bore in. There were little markings to show where to set the screws, but they were not pre-drilled. Also, the markings for the caster screws seemed to be out of alignment. I remarked for the caster holes and then pre-drilled holes for all of the wood screws using a 5/64 bit. I'm so glad that I did. It cut back on elbow grease considerably. This does sit high up off the ground. I am using it in my (very small) living room and I thought at first that it sat up too high, but I'm liking its height more and more. It looks substantial. It does off gas like any new furniture these days but it isn’t horribly strong and I’m sure that it will also subside over time. My main misgiving is the quality of the materials. It ins't rickety; it feels quite solid due to the design, but it's otherwise what you'd expect from low-priced, self-assembly furniture. I imagine it will hold up some years for my mild purposes, but I could see kids breaking this fairly easily. It doesn't have the strength of fine hard wood piece of furniture.
I wanted this bed to be a darker hue of wood than the picture shows and it is! I'd call it a dark cherry wood almost to an espresso... It shows a lot of hits grains and looks slightly more polished than a reclaimed wood look. It's matching other reclaimed wood looking furniture so I'm so pleased!!! Very sturdy! I placed a twin sized 11 inch medium-firm memory foam mattress directly inside the main bed frame WITHOUT a box spring and it's sticks up and out of the bed frame he perfect amount. And is holding its shape comfortably. The trundle is strong and sturdy. The space between the inner bottom of the trundle drawer and the bed frame is approximately 9 inches. I will probably get another memory foam matteress for the trundle, but get a thinner 6-8 inch foam matteress. This bed was exactly what I needed for additional guests and a possibly kids bed in the future!!! The delivery guys assembled it for me, 'white glove delivery!' THANKS Overstock!
