Story Behind the Art:
Artisans from the Akamb tribe of Kenya work side by side to create these imposing African creatures. A master carver first shapes each animal from a block of native Jacaranda wood, then another artisan brings up the woods fine finish hand paints each realistic animal - the giants of the African plains. No two are exactly alike.

The elephant comes with individual tusks you insert on each side. This art piece's uniqueness and authenticity sets it apart from all the mass-produced "home goods" you find everywhere. It brings an exotic feel to my livingroom. Looking at it makes you feel like you are in Africa! I especially feel good that my purchase is supporting an African tribe. It is a win-win situation for all.

My master bedroom has a safari look and feel. This column is on my chocolate brown dresser and is STUNNING. It has a handcrafted look (which makes sense; it is handcrafted), but there's a fine workmanship to the piece, too. I particularly love the elephant tusks, which came wrapped separately so as not to break. Several people say it looks so stunning and authentic, they thought I got it on safari! The final bonus: I understand that, in buying this item, one is helping the people of the Akamb tribe survive. Another hit, Overstock.
