The biggest question on this one would be, is it real wood?? The exterior is heavily lacquered top and bottom, so it's hard to tell. It has some heft to it, but a small corner where the lacquer has worn off shows a much lighter color underneath, that doesn't appear to show any grain. Since I'm using the stand to prop up cookware in a glass door cabinet, it doesn't matter much to me, so I am pretty happy with the purchase
