Each piece has gone through multiple stages of sanding and waxing, giving the soapstone a satiny finish. Soapstone is a soft, natural mineral from the earth, making it easy to carve into many forms. Handle with care to avoid breakage. Each sculpture is artfully hand-carved from a single piece of Kisii soapstone, found only in the hills of southwestern Kenya. Mining the soapstone from surface hills is a labor-intensive process, using little to no machinery. Laborers works with shovels, picks, axes and machetes to carve out large soapstone chucks, which are then carved into beautiful art. ​

Story Behind the Art:
The artisans of Kenya represent a talented group who live in rural Kenya in the region called Kisii, well-known for soapstone crafts. SMOLart is named for "Small, Medium, Large" to reference the size of the sculptures that are lovingly crafted by hand from locally mined stone. The self-help organization provides member carvers with marketing and logistical support to sell their crafts while also promoting sustainability. Their work is reducing poverty through economic transformation in a country where the majority are income poor or near the poverty line.
