I am Shruti Mishra and I'm a painter. I was born in Jharkhand in 1978, where I grew up in a very protective environment. I pursued my higher education in Delhi.

Living in Delhi challenged me to overcome my inhibitions and insecurities on my own. I grew up to be a mature person, but I still value my small town background. Growing up in Jharkhand gave me a better understanding of the world and it prepared me for the future.

I've been painting since I was young and learned the Madhubani style of painting from my mother and grandmother. I learned about other art styles and painting techniques in school. However, in the university I began learning about symbols. This helped me appreciate Madhubani painting more and I found a deeper association in it.

I usually use pens and ivory paper, or card stock, for my paintings. Eventually, I'd like to paint on fabric.

What I love about Madhubani art is how creative and meditative it can be. I can paint while happy, stressed or frustrated. It really calms me down.

It's challenging when you have an image in mind but can't find the words to convey it. Painting is one of the best ways to express your feelings.

Mastering this art took a great deal of practice. My inspiration comes from Indian mythology and certain rituals I practice at home to keep me connected to my roots. This helps me depict what I feel and understand through my paintings.

When I was starting out, I was intimidated and apprehensive but also excited and determined to overcome my fears.
