Story Behind the Art:
Kilims are known as 'pile-less' rugs; the design is also known as slit-weave. These beautiful designs are achieved by interweaving the various colors of the vertical and horizontal strands of the rug. It can be used as a hanging piece or as a floor covering. This particular rug was made in the Varanasi region of India, by the Bhadohi village weavers, led by Shyamlal. The vegetable dyes most commonly used in these flat-weave rugs are madder, the root of a spindly bush which grows abundantly in many carpet-producing area which is used to create a red color. Walnut peel is used for dark brown, pomegranate peel for light brown, and sparak which is a wild flower from the steppes, used for yellow.
The handcrafted touch of artisan skill creates variations in color, size and design. If buying two of the same item, slight differences should be expected. Note: Color discrepancies may occur between this product and your computer screen.
