Story Behind the Art:
Kilims are known as 'pile-less' rugs; the design isalso known as slit-weave. These beautiful designs are achieved byinterweaving the various colors of the vertical and horizontalstrands of the rug. It can be used as a hanging piece or as a floorcovering. This particular rug was made in the Varanasi region ofIndia, by the Bhadohi village weavers, led by Shyamlal. Thevegetable dyes most commonly used in these flat-weave rugs aremadder, the root of a spindly bush which grows abundantly in manycarpet-producing area which is used to create a red color. Walnutpeel is used for dark brown, pomegranate peel for light brown, andsparak which is a wild flower from the steppes, used for yellow.The handcrafted touch of artisan skill creates variations in color,size and design.
